Tinubu Approves Six Key Appointments in Education Sector, Retains Senior Officials in Major Reforms

President Bola Tinubu has approved six strategic appointments in Nigeria’s education sector, a move the Presidency says is aimed at strengthening institutional leadership, improving governance, and enhancing service delivery across key educational agencies.

The announcement was contained in an official statement released on Wednesday, confirming a mix of new appointments, reappointments, and tenure renewals across major federal education institutions.

Among the newly appointed and retained officials is Prof. Modupe Adeola Adelabu, who has been named Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Examinations Council (NECO). She is expected to oversee policy direction and governance reforms within the examination body, which plays a central role in secondary school certification in Nigeria.

Also in NECO, Prof. Ibrahim Dantani Wushishi has been retained as Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the organisation. His continuation in office signals confidence in his ongoing leadership of the council, which is responsible for conducting national examinations and ensuring academic standards across secondary education.

In the technical education sub-sector, Prof. Babatunde Salako has been appointed as Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE). The board oversees policy implementation and regulatory supervision of technical and vocational education institutions across the country.

Similarly, Prof. Idris M. Bugaje has been reappointed as Executive Secretary of NBTE for a second and final five-year term. His reappointment is expected to provide continuity in ongoing reforms targeted at improving technical and vocational education, which the federal government has consistently identified as critical to youth employment and industrial development.

In the polytechnic sector, Engr. Dr. Bongfa Binfa has been appointed Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, N’yak-Shendam in Plateau State. He will serve a five-year term, during which he is expected to provide academic and administrative leadership for the institution, as well as strengthen technical training and innovation.

Another key appointment is the renewal of Prof. Chinwe Veronica Anunobi as Director/Chief Executive of the National Library of Nigeria. She has also been granted a final five-year term to continue overseeing the nation’s apex library institution, which is responsible for preserving Nigeria’s literary heritage and promoting information access.

The Presidency noted that these appointments are part of broader efforts to reposition the education sector for improved efficiency, accountability, and global competitiveness. It emphasized that the selection of experienced academics and professionals reflects the administration’s focus on merit and continuity in critical institutions.

Education stakeholders have often argued that consistent leadership in regulatory and examination bodies is essential for sustaining reforms, particularly in a sector grappling with infrastructural deficits, funding constraints, and curriculum challenges.

NECO, for instance, remains one of the key examination bodies in Nigeria alongside WAEC, and its leadership is central to maintaining credibility in national assessments. Similarly, NBTE plays a crucial role in aligning technical education with labour market needs, especially at a time when Nigeria is seeking to diversify its economy beyond oil dependency.

The appointment and renewal of officials in these institutions come at a time when the federal government is also pushing policies aimed at expanding vocational training, digital skills acquisition, and improved access to tertiary education through various interventions.

Prof. Bugaje’s continuation at NBTE is expected to further deepen reforms in technical education, particularly in curriculum restructuring and industry partnerships. His tenure has been associated with efforts to modernise technical institutions and improve employability among graduates.

At the National Library of Nigeria, Prof. Anunobi’s renewed tenure is expected to focus on digitisation efforts, improved library infrastructure, and expanded access to knowledge resources across the country.

The appointment of Engr. Dr. Bongfa Binfa as Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, N’yak-Shendam is also seen as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen polytechnic education, which remains a critical pathway for technical manpower development in Nigeria.

While the Presidency did not announce any major policy changes alongside the appointments, analysts say the leadership changes could influence the direction of reforms within the education sector over the coming years.

Observers note that institutional leadership plays a key role in shaping educational outcomes, particularly in examination bodies and regulatory agencies where consistency and credibility are essential.

As the newly appointed and reappointed officials assume their roles, expectations remain high that they will contribute to improving standards, strengthening governance, and aligning Nigeria’s education system with global best practices.

The developments mark another phase in the Tinubu administration’s broader governance restructuring efforts across key sectors of the economy, including education, infrastructure, and public service delivery.
