At least 18 Nigerian students have secured scholarships valued at over $2 million through an initiative spearheaded by award-winning music star Tiwa Savage in partnership with the prestigious Berklee College of Music in the United States.
The announcement was made at the grand finale of the “Berklee in Nigeria” programme, held in Lagos, marking a significant milestone in efforts to expand access to global music education for young African creatives. The initiative, which has attracted widespread attention within the entertainment and education sectors, is designed to identify and nurture emerging talent by providing world-class training and scholarship opportunities.
According to organisers, the programme drew an overwhelming response, with more than 2,000 applicants from across Nigeria vying for a place. After a rigorous screening process, 120 candidates were shortlisted and invited to participate in an intensive four-day training camp. The sessions were led by faculty members from the Berklee College of Music, who worked closely with participants to assess their skills and potential.
The shortlisted candidates underwent training in various aspects of music, including performance, songwriting, music production, and the business side of the industry. The programme aimed to provide a holistic understanding of the music ecosystem, equipping participants with both creative and entrepreneurial skills needed to succeed in a highly competitive global industry.
At the conclusion of the training, 18 outstanding participants were selected to receive full or partial scholarships to study at Berklee’s campus in Boston. The beneficiaries are expected to undergo a three-year academic programme, where they will further develop their craft under the guidance of internationally recognised instructors and industry professionals.
Sharing the development on social media, Tiwa Savage expressed excitement over the impact of the initiative, describing it as a major step toward building sustainable opportunities for African talent.
“Over $2 million was awarded to 18 students at the @TSMFOFFICIAL Berklee in Nigeria Grand Finale. This is what building infrastructure is, this is what creating access is. Glory be to God,” she wrote.
The programme is part of a broader effort to bridge the gap between local talent and global opportunities, particularly in an industry where access to quality education and international exposure often remains limited by financial constraints.
Savage, who is herself an alumna of the Berklee College of Music, has consistently highlighted the challenges faced by aspiring African musicians, noting that high tuition fees and limited access to training institutions abroad often prevent talented individuals from reaching their full potential.
By collaborating with Berklee to bring the programme to Nigeria, she aims to remove some of these barriers and create a pathway for young creatives to gain access to world-class education without the usual financial hurdles.
Industry observers have praised the initiative as a significant contribution to the development of Africa’s creative sector, noting that it not only provides educational opportunities but also strengthens the global presence of African music.
The selected students are expected to represent a new generation of Nigerian artists who will benefit from international exposure, professional networks, and advanced training. Many believe that such initiatives could help further position Nigeria as a major hub for global music talent.
The success of the programme has also sparked conversations about the need for more partnerships between international institutions and local stakeholders to support talent development in Africa. Advocates argue that sustained investment in education and capacity-building is essential for the long-term growth of the creative industry.
As the beneficiaries prepare to begin their studies in Boston, the initiative stands as a testament to the impact of strategic collaboration and the role of established artists in creating opportunities for the next generation.
For now, the “Berklee in Nigeria” programme is being celebrated as a transformative platform that not only rewards talent but also redefines access, offering young Nigerian creatives a chance to compete and thrive on the global stage.
