UNIFIL Probes Deadly Attack on Peacekeepers in Southern Lebanon, Warns of Possible War Crime

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has launched a formal investigation following a deadly attack on its personnel in southern Lebanon, where one peacekeeper was killed and three others injured after coming under small-arms fire.

In a statement issued on Saturday, UNIFIL said the incident occurred in the village of Ghanduriyah while a patrol team was engaged in clearing explosive ordnance along a road. The operation, according to the mission, was aimed at re-establishing access routes and reconnecting isolated UN positions in the area.

“This morning, a UNIFIL patrol clearing explosive ordnance along a road in the village of Ghanduriyah to re-establish links with isolated UNIFIL positions came under small-arms fire from non-state actors,” the statement read.

The peacekeeping force confirmed that one of its personnel later died from injuries sustained during the attack, while three others were wounded. Two of the injured peacekeepers were said to be in serious condition and have since been evacuated to medical facilities for urgent treatment.

UNIFIL described the attack as deliberate and strongly condemned the use of violence against personnel carrying out internationally mandated duties. It stressed that such incidents undermine ongoing efforts to maintain stability in the region and protect civilian populations.

Preliminary assessments by the mission indicated that the gunfire may have originated from non-state actors, allegedly linked to Hezbollah, though investigations are ongoing and no official confirmation has been made.

“The work of explosive ordnance disposal teams is vital in the mission’s area of operations, especially in the wake of recent hostilities,” UNIFIL stated, highlighting the importance of such operations in preventing further harm to civilians and peacekeepers alike.

The peacekeeping mission emphasized that all parties operating within Lebanon are bound by international law to ensure the safety and security of UN personnel and property at all times. It warned that attacks targeting peacekeepers constitute serious violations of international humanitarian law.

“Deliberate attacks on peacekeepers are grave breaches of international law and may rise to the level of war crimes,” the statement said, referencing provisions under United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, which governs the mandate and operations of UNIFIL in southern Lebanon.

Resolution 1701, adopted in 2006, calls for the cessation of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah and mandates the deployment of UN peacekeepers to help maintain a buffer zone and support the Lebanese Armed Forces in securing the region.

UNIFIL also called on the Lebanese government to act swiftly in investigating the incident and ensuring accountability for those responsible. The mission urged authorities to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice in accordance with national and international legal standards.

“The Lebanese government must swiftly initiate an investigation to identify and hold the perpetrators accountable for the crimes committed against UNIFIL peacekeepers,” the statement added.

The attack has raised fresh concerns about the security environment in southern Lebanon, where UN peacekeepers operate in a complex and often volatile setting. While UNIFIL has maintained a presence in the region for decades, incidents involving direct attacks on its personnel are relatively rare but carry significant implications.

Security analysts note that the presence of various armed groups and the lingering effects of past conflicts contribute to the fragility of the area. The recent hostilities referenced by UNIFIL have further complicated the operational landscape, increasing risks for both peacekeepers and local communities.

The international community is expected to closely monitor developments following the attack, particularly the outcome of the investigation and any measures taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Countries contributing troops to UNIFIL, including France and others, may also review security protocols to better protect their personnel amid evolving threats.

The incident underscores the broader challenges faced by UN peacekeeping missions worldwide, especially in regions marked by political instability and armed conflict. Ensuring the safety of peacekeepers remains a critical priority, as they play a key role in conflict prevention, humanitarian support, and post-conflict recovery.

As UNIFIL continues its operations, the outcome of the investigation into the Ghanduriyah attack will likely shape future engagement strategies and reinforce calls for stronger adherence to international norms.

For now, the loss of a peacekeeper serves as a stark reminder of the dangers inherent in peacekeeping missions and the urgent need for all parties to respect international law and support efforts to maintain peace and stability in southern Lebanon.
