Yusuf Buhari, son of former President Muhammadu Buhari, has formally declared his intention to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives in the lead-up to Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
The announcement was made on Thursday in Daura, his hometown in Katsina State, marking his official entry into partisan politics and signalling what observers describe as a continuation of political influence within the Buhari family.
Yusuf Buhari revealed that he will be seeking to represent the Daura/Sandamu/Mai’adua Federal Constituency under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the ruling party at the federal level. His declaration comes amid early political manoeuvring and consultations by aspirants positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle.
His decision to run follows a strategic meeting with the Governor of Katsina State, Dikko Radda, which took place on Wednesday. Sources familiar with the development indicated that the meeting was part of broader consultations aimed at securing political backing and aligning with key stakeholders within the state’s political structure.
Addressing party leaders, supporters, and community stakeholders during the declaration event, Yusuf Buhari made a direct appeal for grassroots support, pledging to deliver effective and responsive representation if elected into office. His remarks reflected a tone of humility and a call for collective effort in achieving electoral success.
“I am here to seek your support, and I assure you that if elected, I will do my best and will never disappoint you, God willing. I thank all of you for your time, dedication and support,” he said.
The gathering attracted several notable political figures and stakeholders from across the constituency, highlighting the significance of the moment within the local political landscape. Among those present was Fatuhu Muhammad, a former member of the House of Representatives who previously represented the constituency. His presence, alongside other political allies and members of the Buhari family, underscored the level of support and interest surrounding Yusuf’s candidacy.
Community leaders at the event openly canvassed support for Yusuf Buhari, describing his ambition as a unifying opportunity for the constituency. One of the prominent voices at the gathering, Musa Haro, who holds the traditional title of Dan Madamin Daura and serves as the District Head of Dumurkol, urged residents to rally behind the aspirant.
In his remarks, Haro emphasised the importance of unity among political stakeholders and outlined plans to mobilise support across the constituency. He disclosed that efforts would be made to engage voters in towns and villages throughout the area, while also reaching out to other aspirants in a bid to foster collaboration and minimise political divisions.
“We are here to ask for your support for our brother. We will go to the people in every town and village to seek their support. We will also reach out to other aspirants contesting the same seat to collaborate with them and seek their support,” Haro said.
He also acknowledged the performance of the current occupant of the seat, Aminu Jamo, noting that while no public office holder can achieve perfection, efforts made in service should be recognised.
“Even the current member, Hon. Aminu Jamo, did his best. We know how politics is — nobody can do 100 per cent,” he added.
The Daura/Sandamu/Mai’adua Federal Constituency, which Yusuf Buhari seeks to represent, is a politically significant area within Katsina State, not least because of its historical association with the Buhari family. Political analysts note that Yusuf’s entry into the race could reshape the dynamics of the contest, particularly within the APC, where internal competition is expected to intensify as more aspirants declare their interest.
While Yusuf Buhari has largely maintained a low public profile compared to other members of his family, his decision to run for elective office marks a notable shift and introduces a new dimension to his public life. Observers say his candidacy will likely draw heightened attention, both because of his lineage and the expectations that come with it.
The early declaration also reflects a broader trend of political mobilisation well ahead of the official campaign season, as aspirants seek to build name recognition, secure endorsements, and establish grassroots structures. Within Katsina State, the APC remains a dominant political force, but internal alignments and negotiations are expected to play a crucial role in determining party tickets.
As the 2027 elections approach, Yusuf Buhari’s candidacy is expected to generate conversations around political legacy, youth participation, and the evolving nature of representation in Nigeria’s democratic system. Supporters argue that his background and exposure position him to contribute meaningfully to legislative work, while critics may question the implications of political dynasties in a democratic setting.
For now, Yusuf Buhari has set the stage for what is likely to be a closely watched contest in the Daura/Sandamu/Mai’adua Federal Constituency, as political actors within and beyond Katsina State begin to position themselves for the next general elections.
