Efforts to safeguard the rich cultural identity and linguistic heritage of the Uvwie people took a futuristic turn on Monday, May 11, 2026, as the Executive Chairman of Uvwie Local Government Council, Hon. Chief Anthony Onoriode Ofoni JP, threw his full weight behind a digital revolution for the kingdom. During a strategic consultative meeting at the council headquarters, Chief Ofoni advocated for the deployment of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and modern Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to ensure the Uvwie language remains vibrant and accessible in an increasingly digitized world.
The council boss received members of the Committee on Uvwie Language, a body dedicated to the scholarly and communal preservation of the kingdom's mother tongue. The meeting was convened to harmonize the committee’s traditional preservation strategies with Chief Ofoni’s visionary agenda to digitize Uvwie Local Government Area. The Chairman noted that the usefulness of artificial intelligence in today’s global landscape cannot be overemphasized, stressing that for the Uvwie people to remain relevant and culturally secure, they must flow with the tide of technological advancement.
Chief Ofoni emphasized that language is the soul of any civilization and that the Uvwie language, as the primary heritage of the people, must be protected by all available means. He argued that the traditional methods of passing down language from parent to child, while still essential, are no longer sufficient in an era where the youth and those in the diaspora are more engaged with digital devices than with communal gatherings. By deploying digital tools, Chief Ofoni believes the language can become accessible to Uvwie sons and daughters regardless of their geographical location or age.
With the use of AI, it will be easy for our children, as well as those unborn and for those in the diaspora, to understand that the Uvwie language exists and to learn it with ease, the Chairman stated. He envisioned a future where AI-driven language applications, translation software, and digital archives could serve as a bridge connecting the heritage of the past with the inhabitants of the future.
Beyond the preservation of speech, Chief Ofoni’s digital roadmap for the kingdom includes a massive logistical overhaul of Uvwie’s presence on global digital platforms. He revealed that he has formally instructed the committee to facilitate the precise mapping of Uvwie’s territorial boundaries on Google Maps. This recommendation extends to the detailed imputation of streets, layouts, and landmarks throughout the local government area. According to the Chairman, this initiative will not only foster a sense of pride and ownership among residents but will also enhance the "ease of doing business" by enabling visitors and investors to navigate the kingdom with digital precision.
This is a clarion call to all sons and daughters of Uvwie to avail the committee of their support and cooperation for our collective good, he added. He specifically reached out to the global Uvwie community, urging them to partner with the council and the traditional institution to make this project a reality.
The Chairman was quick to acknowledge that such a monumental task requires a united front. He expressed his profound gratitude to the traditional ruler of the kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Dr. Emmanuel Sideso JP, OON, the Ovie of Uvwie Kingdom, for his fatherly guidance and unwavering support for cultural initiatives. He also called for continued synergy between the Inuevworo of Uvwie Kingdom, the Council of Chiefs, and the local government administration to ensure the success of the digitization drive.
Responding on behalf of the committee, the Chairman of the Committee on Uvwie Language, Chief Fidelis Adjeke JP, commended Chief Ofoni for his pan-Uvwie disposition and his forward-thinking leadership style. He thanked the council chairman for recognizing the committee’s importance and for providing the political will necessary to birth these noble ideas. Chief Adjeke assured the executive head that the recommendations regarding AI integration and the Google Maps project have been officially added to the committee’s priority list for immediate action.
Chief Adjeke also joined the Chairman in appreciating the Ovie of Uvwie, noting that the monarch’s enormous support has been instrumental in the committee’s progress thus far. He prayed for the continued strength and wisdom of the traditional ruler as the kingdom embarks on this historic transition into the digital age.
Political observers and cultural advocates in Delta State have described Chief Ofoni’s proposal as a watershed moment in the history of the Uvwie people. The move is seen as a proactive solution to the global threat of linguistic extinction, which many minority languages face in the 21st century. By integrating AI into cultural preservation, Uvwie is positioning itself as a leader in local government administration within Nigeria.
The high-level meeting concluded with the formal presentation of a detailed blueprint for action by the Committee on Uvwie Language to the Executive Chairman. The document outlines the technical requirements, timelines, and collaborative frameworks needed to execute the digitization of the language and the mapping of the kingdom. Following the presentation, a brief photo session was held to document the occasion, marking what many believe is the start of a lasting solution to the challenges of cultural preservation in Uvwie.
