Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has stirred political debate after declaring that the power to determine his successor rests solely with him, ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
Fintiri made the statement on Tuesday, May 5, while receiving Comrade Mustapha Salihu, an All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant, at the Government House in Yola. The meeting, which observers describe as politically symbolic, comes amid early permutations and alignments ahead of the next election cycle in the state.
According to the governor, Salihu is the first aspirant to formally visit him to present his ambition, a move he acknowledged while addressing the broader issue of succession planning. However, Fintiri used the occasion to assert his influence over the political direction of the state, emphasizing that he would play a निर्णative role in deciding who succeeds him.
“I have the power to appoint and anoint my candidate, and I am looking through all the variables,” the governor said. “By next week, I will make my candidate known.”
The statement has drawn attention for its bold tone, particularly given Nigeria’s democratic framework, where candidates are typically selected through party primaries and elections. Nonetheless, Fintiri appeared confident in his political standing, suggesting that his choice would ultimately prevail at the polls.
He further pledged to mobilize all available political structures to ensure the success of his preferred candidate, stressing that his decision would be guided by what he described as the collective interest of the state.
“And I will go all out, with God on our side, with government structure, all of us, with our sleeves rolled up, we will vote for that candidate because it is the state that we want to salvage,” he stated.
Fintiri also claimed to have a deep understanding of the political mood in Adamawa, noting that his decision would reflect the desires of the people. “I know the pulse of the state, I know what they feel, I know what they are telling me, and I know who they want to succeed me,” he added, indicating that consultations had already taken place behind the scenes.
Despite his strong stance, the governor left the door open for other aspirants to contest, encouraging those who believe in their political strength to step forward. “If you still feel you are man enough, you’re good enough and politically exposed enough to go into the ring, you’re welcome,” he said.
Political analysts say the governor’s remarks highlight the significant influence incumbents often wield in shaping succession politics in Nigeria, particularly within their parties. However, they also note that such declarations can generate controversy, especially among party stakeholders who may view the process as requiring broader consultation and internal democracy.
The presence of an APC aspirant at the meeting has also raised eyebrows, given that Fintiri is a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Some observers interpret the interaction as a sign of cross-party engagement, while others see it as part of early political maneuvering ahead of 2027.
As reactions continue to trail the governor’s comments, attention is now focused on his promised announcement in the coming days. Political stakeholders across Adamawa State are hoping to see who Fintiri will endorse and how that decision will shape the emerging contest.
With the 2027 elections still some distance away, the governor’s declaration has nonetheless injected fresh momentum into the state’s political landscape, setting the stage for what is likely to be a highly competitive and closely watched governorship race.
