Illinois Community in Mourning After Nurse Katherine Torbick is Murdered in Recorded Seven Hour Ordeal

Schaumburg, Illinois — A quiet suburb of Chicago has been left reeling following the revelation of a truly harrowing case of domestic violence that claimed the life of a dedicated healthcare professional. Katherine “Kat” Torbick, a 43-year-old nurse and mother of one, was allegedly subjected to a brutal, hours-long assault and eventual strangulation at the hands of her former boyfriend, 56-year-old Kevin Motykie. The details of the crime, described by authorities as both sadistic and calculated, have ignited a conversation regarding the failures of the legal system to protect victims of chronic domestic abuse.

The tragedy came to light on the evening of April 30, 2026, when the Schaumburg Police Department received a request for a welfare check. A concerned individual had called 911, stating that they had been unable to reach Torbick throughout the day—a silence that was highly uncharacteristic for the reliable mother and nurse. Officers dispatched to the residence were already familiar with the address; the home had a documented history of domestic violence calls involving Torbick and Motykie.

Upon arrival, officers found the house locked and received no response from within. Given the violent history associated with the occupants, police made the decision to force entry. Inside, they discovered a scene of absolute horror. Torbick’s lifeless body was found within the living quarters of the home, showing clear signs of a violent struggle and physical trauma. Motykie was subsequently located in the garage. He was initially taken into custody on an outstanding warrant related to a previous domestic battery case involving Torbick, but he now faces far more severe charges, including first-degree murder and aggravated sexual assault.

The investigation took a particularly chilling turn when detectives recovered a digital recording device from Motykie’s person. According to reports from WGN9 and court proceedings, the device contained a staggering seven-hour audio recording that captured the entirety of Torbick’s final hours. Prosecutors describe the recording as a stomach-churning chronicle of torture, sexual assault, and interrogation.

In the audio clips presented during initial court hearings, the pair can be heard arguing about the dissolution of their ten-year relationship. Torbick and Motykie had reportedly ended their long-term partnership earlier this year, and Torbick had recently begun dating someone else—a development that allegedly sent Motykie into a murderous rage. The recording reportedly captures Torbick begging for her life and pleading with Motykie not to use handcuffs on her.

Officials allege that Motykie spent hours berating Torbick with accusations of cheating while subjecting her to repeated sexual assaults. The audio evidence suggests that Torbick was bound with duct tape and beaten as her attacker continued to interrogate her. Prosecutors revealed that Motykie explicitly told Torbick he intended to kill her and ignored her desperate cries for freedom. Throughout the seven-hour ordeal, he reportedly choked her multiple times to the point of near-unconsciousness before finally ending her life.

The final four minutes of the recording are said to be the most haunting. In them, Motykie is allegedly heard muttering to himself, “I gotta go hang myself,” and “this will take 30 seconds, and think of somewhere happy,” as he carried out the final act of strangulation. At the time of his arrest, police noted that Motykie appeared severely intoxicated, slurring his speech and later admitting to the ingestion of lorazepam and hydrocodone.

The loss of Katherine Torbick has left a massive void in the local medical community. A highly respected gastroenterology nurse with over two decades of experience, Torbick was known for her clinical excellence and her compassionate bedside manner. In addition to her hospital work, she served as a registered nurse at the Fox River MedSpa in Algonquin.

In a poignant tribute shared on social media, the Fox River MedSpa remembered her as a vital member of their “sisterhood.” The statement described her as a woman who brought warmth and energy to every room she entered. “She made an impact that will not be forgotten—with both clients and teammates,” the spa wrote. “Our hearts are with her family, especially her son, during this unimaginable time. She mattered. She was valued. And she will always be part of our story.”

As the community mourns, questions are being raised about the adequacy of the protections afforded to Torbick prior to her death. Records indicate that Motykie had a significant and escalating history of domestic violence. In mid-March, just weeks before the murder, he had been accused of hitting Torbick, attempting to gouge out her eyes, and choking her in the same home where she eventually died. Despite these red flags and the pending domestic battery warrant, Motykie remained in a position to carry out this premeditated attack.

Domestic violence advocates point to this case as a textbook example of how the period following a breakup is often the most dangerous for a victim. Motykie’s alleged use of a recording device to document his crimes suggests a level of premeditation and a desire for control that defines the most extreme cases of intimate partner violence.

Kevin Motykie remains in custody as the judicial process begins. For the family, friends, and colleagues of Katherine Torbick, the focus remains on honoring the memory of a woman who dedicated her life to caring for others, and ensuring that her young son is supported as he navigates a future without his mother. The case serves as a grim reminder of the lethal reality of domestic abuse and the desperate need for more robust intervention strategies to prevent such calculated tragedies from recurring.
