Keyamo Blasts NDC and Peter Obi Over 2027 Southern Zoning Pact, Labels "One-Term" Promise a Political Fraud

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has launched a blistering verbal assault on the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and its prominent figure, Peter Obi, following the party’s strategic decision to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the Southern region of Nigeria. In a sharply worded critique that has intensified the pre-election atmosphere, Keyamo characterized the party’s proposal for a single-term presidency as a deceptive maneuver designed to "hoodwink" the Nigerian electorate.

The controversy erupted after the NDC held its National Convention in Abuja over the weekend, where party delegates officially resolved to reserve the 2027 presidential slot for a candidate from the South. Crucially, the resolution included a caveat that the Southern candidate would serve for only a single four-year term, after which the presidency would automatically rotate back to the North in 2031. This arrangement is widely seen as an attempt to harmonize the ambitions of Southern leaders like Peter Obi with Northern power blocs, including followers of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

Reacting to the development via a statement on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Monday, May 11, 2026, Keyamo did not mince words. He dismissed the NDC’s one-term pledge as a "419 decision"—referencing the section of the Nigerian criminal code dealing with advance fee fraud. According to the Minister, the promise is an audacious attempt to trick voters, drawing a direct and unflattering parallel to past political history.

The decision of the NDC to zone its Presidential ticket to the South for just one term is an audacious attempt to hoodwink Nigerians, Keyamo stated. It reminds us of the undertaking by Goodluck Jonathan in 2011 to serve just one full term and quit. The Minister’s reference to the 2011 cycle highlights a perennial skepticism in Nigerian politics regarding the reliability of informal power-sharing agreements and personal "gentleman’s agreements" between politicians.

Keyamo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and a vocal defender of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) administration, argued that such a term-limit pledge is legally unenforceable and politically suspicious. He questioned the sincerity of the NDC’s leadership, suggesting that the party is merely telling voters what they want to hear to gain power, with every intention of shifting the goalposts once they are in control of the state apparatus.

He raised a series of hypothetical but pointed questions regarding the future of the agreement if Peter Obi, the former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party standard-bearer, were to win under the NDC banner. Keyamo posited that there are numerous ways a sitting president could circumvent such a restriction, either by switching political parties or by leveraging their influence over the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) to reverse the zoning policy.

So, what happens if Peter Obi changes his party, assuming he wins, or as leader of the NDC he gets the NEC of the party to reverse the decision, if in the unlikely event he wins? Keyamo asked. This is an insult to the sensibilities of Nigerians; it smacks of outright desperation and actually accentuates the dilemma of the opposition as a whole in the 2027 Presidential elections. It is just a joke taken too far; it is nothing but political 419.

The Minister’s critique touches on the complex "zoning" dynamics that have historically dictated the flow of power in Nigeria. For decades, major political parties have attempted to rotate the presidency between the predominantly Muslim North and the predominantly Christian South to maintain national stability and balance. However, the NDC’s specific "one-term" twist appears to be a unique response to the current political climate, where both Southern and Northern opposition figures are jostling for a unified front against the APC.

The NDC, for its part, has defended the move as a necessary sacrifice for national unity and political equity. During the Abuja convention, party leadership emphasized that the four-year term for the South is intended to "preserve political balance" and prevent the kind of internal divisions that fractured the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) prior to the 2023 elections. By promising a return to the North in 2031, the NDC hopes to secure Northern support for a Southern candidate in the immediate term.

However, Keyamo’s rebuttal suggests that the ruling party intends to frame this strategy as a sign of weakness and lack of a coherent long-term vision. By labeling the opposition "desperate," the Minister is seeking to portray the NDC as an unstable coalition of "interest groups" rather than a serious alternative government. He suggested that the "dilemma of the opposition" is rooted in their inability to present a candidate who can win on merit across all regions without resorting to what he views as fraudulent rotational gimmicks.

As the 2027 general elections draw nearer, the rhetoric between the APC-led government and the emerging NDC coalition is expected to sharpen. With Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso recently defecting from the ADC to the NDC to consolidate opposition forces, the stakes for these regional agreements have never been higher.

Keyamo’s intervention serves as a preemptive strike against the opposition's narrative of "fairness and equity." By focusing on the perceived "419" nature of the one-term promise, the Minister is appealing to a sense of voter fatigue with unfulfilled political promises. Whether the Nigerian electorate will view the NDC’s zoning pact as a pragmatic solution to national diversity or, as Keyamo claims, a "desperate" attempt at deception, remains a central question for the 2027 campaign trail. For now, the "Silicon Savannah" of Nigerian politics is once again ablaze with the fires of regional maneuvering and high-stakes verbal warfare.
