Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has condemned US President Donald Trump’s declaration that Washington will use frozen Iranian assets to pay for prospective damages sustained by maritime vessels and cargo in the Strait of Hormuz.
Writing on social media platform X, Araghchi cautioned that seizing foreign state assets to settle unrelated future claims establishes an incendiary precedent in international finance and governance. He warned that normalising the confiscation of sovereign wealth threatens global asset security and risks inducing economic chaos.
The foreign minister's statement came after President Trump announced on Truth Social that the United States would utilize Iranian funds under American control to cover any financial liabilities or losses involving commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. While billions of dollars in Iranian state reserves remain frozen globally under US economic sanctions, the rhetoric marks a further escalation in tensions surrounding regional security and vital maritime transit corridors.
