Algeria Mobilizes Massive Response as Firefighters Contain Over One Hundred Wildfires Amid Scorching Heatwave

Algerian emergency response teams have made significant progress in combating a destructive wave of wildfires, bringing 127 out of 146 blazes reported across the country within a twenty-four-hour period under control. Despite these successes, specialized crews continue intensive efforts to extinguish nineteen active fires that continue to threaten forest lands, agricultural fields, and rural communities. Lieutenant Colonel Nassim Bernaoui, who serves as the head of media and public awareness at the General Directorate of Civil Protection, disclosed during an address on state radio that emergency personnel are operating in close coordination with specialized military units, forestry services, local municipal authorities, and community volunteers to halt the advance of remaining fire fronts.

The North African nation has been battling an extraordinary sequence of forest and brush fires for roughly two weeks, driven by relentless summer heatwaves where daily temperatures have routinely exceeded forty-eight degrees Celsius. The prolonged dry spell and elevated temperatures have created severe environmental conditions, causing vegetation to become highly flammable across northern and coastal provinces. In response to the escalating crisis, civil defense authorities initiated an emergency recall requiring thousands of off-duty personnel across forty-five provinces to report to their posts immediately, raising total field deployment to around nineteen thousand emergency workers.

Statistical data provided by the Civil Protection Directorate underscores the extreme intensity of this year's fire season. Since the beginning of July, emergency response units have responded to approximately 1,460 separate wildfire incidents nationwide. Firefighters and aerial support teams have managed to contain or fully extinguish between eighty-five and ninety percent of these outbreaks before they could cause widespread damage to heavily populated urban areas. However, broader seasonal figures reveal a dramatic spike in incidents compared to the previous year. Authorities have documented 3,719 individual wildfires since the start of May, representing more than double the 1,501 fires registered during the exact same timeframe in the prior year.

The ecological and economic impact of the blazes has been considerable across multiple administrative districts. Reports compiled by the General Directorate of Forests indicate that more than 1,666 hectares of land have suffered severe damage, encompassing natural forest cover, dense scrubland, brush, alfa grass pastures, fruit orchards, and traditional mountain crop fields. Rural agricultural communities have been particularly hard-hit, suffering severe losses to livestock, farming machinery, and perennial crops that serve as critical livelihoods for local residents.

Firefighting operations have relied on both ground forces and heavy aerial resources to access rugged terrain and suppress fast-moving flames. Specialized water-bombing aircraft, including Beriev BE-200 amphibian planes and Air Tractor AT-802 fire tractors, have conducted numerous sorties dropping thousands of liters of water over active fire zones in heavily affected provinces such as Setif, Bejaia, Skikda, Saida, Tlemcen, and Tizi Ouzou. Precautionary evacuations have been carried out in several rural municipalities to protect residents from thick smoke inhalation and encroaching flames, with hundreds of villagers temporarily relocated from threatened settlements to safe temporary shelters organized by municipal authorities.

The persistent heatwave has also placed severe strain on the national power grid, causing widespread electricity fluctuations and localized blackouts as demand for cooling surged across urban centers. Meteorological agencies maintain elevated weather alerts across eastern and central provinces, predicting high thermal conditions to persist over coming days. Government officials continue to urge citizens to exercise extreme vigilance, strictly avoid lighting open fires in forested areas, and immediately report any nascent fire sightings to emergency hotlines as public safety teams remain on high alert.
