The Anambra State Government has formally arraigned a local blogger, Ejike Ofoegbu, over serious allegations bordering on criminal defamation and cybercrime. The legal action follows the online publication of several high-profile reports found to contain entirely false and malicious claims concerning the Executive Governor of the state, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, alongside various members of his immediate family.
Ofoegbu, who operates prominently within the digital media space as the primary publisher of the online platforms Igbo Times Magazine and INews, appeared before a Magistrate Court sitting in Amawbia on Monday. His appearance marked the official commencement of state-led legal proceedings aimed at addressing the spread of malicious misinformation.
The development was formally confirmed to the public through an official statement disseminated by the Anambra State New Media team. The press release verified that the publisher was brought before the magistrate to answer to specific criminal charges directly linked to the controversial publications targeting the governor's household.
Public Apology and Admission of Fabrication
The state's decision to proceed with the formal arraignment comes immediately after Ofoegbu had issued a highly publicized apology and a comprehensive retraction of the offensive reports, which had previously circulated heavily across mainstream social media networks and various digital forums.
In his written retraction, the publisher explicitly confessed that a significant number of the sensational stories he authored and distributed regarding Governor Soludo and his son, Ozonna Soludo, were completely devoid of truth. He openly acknowledged that the narratives were intentionally fabricated and entirely lacked any form of factual basis. Ofoegbu admitted that none of the published information was sourced from the governor, his son, any authorized family representative, or verified official channels.
"I publicly admit that the stories I published concerning Governor Soludo and his son were completely fake, false, fabricated, and untrue. They did not come from Governor Soludo, his son, his family, or any official representative. They were not based on any verified facts or credible source, and they should never have been presented as news," Ofoegbu stated during his public confession.
Motivation Driven by Online Engagement
Among the specific widely read reports that have now been completely withdrawn by the blogger were highly damaging claims alleging that Governor Soludo had formally disowned his son. Additionally, the retraction covers separate fabricated stories which falsely suggested that Ozonna Soludo had made highly critical and damaging public remarks aimed directly against his father and the rest of his family.
Ofoegbu openly confessed that his primary motivation for creating and disseminating the false narratives was an aggressive desire to drive high volumes of online traffic, attract social media attention, and rapidly increase user engagement metrics on his publication platforms. Expressing deep remorse for his actions, the blogger offered an unreserved apology to Governor Soludo, his family members, his digital readers, and the general citizens of Anambra State for the misinformation.
While the state ministry of justice has not yet given an indication as to whether they intend to file additional or amended charges against the publisher, the cybercrime case is fully expected to proceed through the court system in the coming days.
