Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has made a formal appeal to the European Union to deploy observers to closely monitor the forthcoming governorship election in the state. The governor emphasized that international observation is vital to strengthening transparency, boosting public confidence, and ensuring strict adherence to established electoral laws.
The governor presented his request during a high-level diplomatic meeting with the Austrian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Peter Guschelbauer, at the Government House in Osogbo. Adeleke noted that the active presence of international observers would encourage compliance with global democratic standards and discourage electoral malpractices during the voting exercise.
Governor Adeleke urged the European Union to take a special interest in the upcoming political contest, highlighting the impact that external oversight has on local processes. He stated that the intervention of international monitoring teams would serve as a safeguard for democratic practices and the Electoral Act, ultimately paving the way for a free, fair, and credible poll.
The governor assured the diplomat that his administration remains fully committed to maintaining peace before, during, and after the election. He added that the state government is dedicated to providing an enabling environment for all political actors, electoral officials, and voters to exercise their rights without fear of intimidation.
Beyond the discussion on regional political stability, Governor Adeleke used the diplomatic visit to pitch various investment opportunities available within Osun State. He explained that the state boasts immense untapped potential in key economic sectors, including commercial agriculture, renewable energy infrastructure, solid minerals, technology hubs, public education, and vocational training frameworks. He extended an open invitation to Austrian firms and the broader European business community, stating that his administration is eager to establish partnerships that drive mutual economic growth and create sustainable jobs for local residents.
In his response, Ambassador Guschelbauer affirmed that the European Union maintains a deep interest in promoting democratic values and supporting credible electoral processes globally. He expressed optimism that the Osun governorship election would be conducted in strict compliance with Nigeria's legal frameworks.
The ambassador pointed out that the upcoming vote is attracting significant attention because it serves as an important political barometer ahead of the 2027 general elections. He commended the administration's governance milestones and urged all participating political parties, candidates, and their supporters to maintain an orderly conduct throughout the entire electioneering period.
Concluding his remarks, Guschelbauer highlighted the longstanding cultural relationship connecting Austria and Osun State, specifically anchored by the globally celebrated Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove. He reaffirmed Austria's commitment to supporting cultural preservation projects and tourism development, while facilitating stronger commercial exchanges between European enterprises and local businesses. The highly anticipated Osun State governorship election is officially scheduled to take place on August 15, with 14 political parties cleared to compete for the state's executive seat.
