LAGOS, Nigeria — Afrobeats superstar Davido has shared a fascinating behind-the-scenes story detailing how a sudden production emergency unexpectedly launched the career of the lead video vixen in his classic music video for *Aye*, which was released 12 years ago.
Speaking during an interview on the UK-based radio station Capital XTRA, the multi-award-winning artist revealed that the memorable casting choice was completely accidental. The woman who eventually starred as his love interest in the rural-themed visual was never actually meant to be in front of the camera.
According to Davido, the production team had initially hired a professional model and beauty pageant contestant to play the lead role. However, the shoot was thrown into immediate jeopardy just as filming was about to commence.
“The girl who was meant to be the lead was in a pageant," Davido explained during the radio show. "We were about to shoot when her manager called to say the pageant organizers had reminded them she was under contract, so we couldn’t use her. We ended up using her makeup artist instead."
The singer initially added a dramatic twist to the tale, claiming that after the music video achieved massive global success and millions of views, the unexpected fame created a rift between the original model and her makeup artist, causing the two friends to fall out.
However, following the broadcast, the Assurance crooner quickly walked back the dramatic ending of the story. Taking to social media, Davido left a clarifying comment on a repost of the interview, reassuring fans that his previous statement was just lighthearted banter and that the two longtime friends never actually had a falling out over the video's success.
