Chinese President Xi Jinping held an official welcome ceremony in Beijing on Tuesday for Slovak President Peter Pellegrini, who is currently undertaking a high-profile state visit to China. The ceremony was reported by state-run news media, including the Xinhua News Agency, marking the formal commencement of President Pellegrini's official engagements and scheduled diplomatic discussions in the Chinese capital.
The state visit represents a notable landmark in regional and bilateral diplomacy, as it is President Pellegrini's first official trip to China since he assumed office in 2024. Pellegrini arrived in Beijing on Monday for the three-day state visit, which includes high-level talks with top Chinese leadership. Beyond meeting with President Xi Jinping, the Slovak head of state is scheduled to engage in discussions with Premier Li Qiang and Zhao Leji, the chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress.
During their scheduled bilateral meetings, President Xi and President Pellegrini are expected to conduct comprehensive talks focused on deepening political mutual trust, enhancing economic collaboration, and addressing broader regional and international developments. Ahead of the official engagements, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated that China stands ready to work alongside Slovakia to consolidate their long-standing traditional friendship, better synergize their national development strategies, and expand mutually beneficial exchanges and institutional cooperation across multiple sectors. Beijing also expressed interest in fostering high-quality cooperation within framework initiatives, such as the Belt and Road Initiative and joint mechanisms linking China with countries across Central and Eastern Europe.
In public statements shared on social media, President Pellegrini emphasized the crucial timing and strategic importance of the diplomatic mission. He noted that direct engagement between top leadership serves to strengthen strategic ties and provides a constructive framework for addressing pressing global issues during a period of dynamic geopolitical shifts. The visit offers both nations an opportunity to chart out a clear roadmap for future bilateral relations, trade ties, and educational and cultural exchanges.
Economic and commercial interaction between China and Slovakia has remained a central pillar of their overall partnership. According to economic trade figures reported by state broadcaster CGTN, merchandise trade volume between the two nations reached substantial levels in 2025. Chinese exports to Slovakia totaled approximately 4.39 billion dollars during that year, while Chinese imports from Slovakia amounted to roughly 4.24 billion dollars, reflecting a relatively balanced commercial exchange characterized by high volumes of industrial components, automotive products, and advanced machinery.
As the three-day state visit progresses, officials from both governments are anticipated to review potential investment initiatives, infrastructure development opportunities, and diplomatic channels designed to foster stable relations between China and Central European nations. The discussions in Beijing are viewed by international observers as a deliberate effort by Slovakia to maintain open economic and diplomatic channels with key global partners while seeking new areas of economic growth and technological cooperation.
