Israeli Military Escalates Operations Across Southern Lebanon and Airspace Over Beirut Despite US-Brokered Security Agreement

The Israeli military significantly intensified its armed operations across multiple districts of southern Lebanon overnight Wednesday and into Thursday morning, conducting drone strikes, launching heavy machine-gun fire, and carrying out widespread demolitions despite the recent signing of a US-sponsored security framework agreement. State-run media and regional observers reported that Israeli reconnaissance drones also carried out repeated low-altitude overflights over the Lebanese capital of Beirut and its southern suburbs, maintaining persistent aerial surveillance over densely populated civilian areas.

According to official reports published by Lebanon's National News Agency, an Israeli unmanned aerial vehicle executed a targeted strike in the Msha al-Mansouri area within the Tyre district of the South Governorate. Concurrently, an Israeli naval vessel was observed holding position off the Mediterranean coast of Mansouri, providing offshore monitoring as ground forces conducted heavy engineering operations onshore. Residents throughout the Tyre region reported hearing a continuous series of massive detonations beginning shortly after midnight and extending into the early morning hours, as Israeli military engineering units set off large explosive charges to systematically destroy structures in several towns situated across the western sector of southern Lebanon, including Mansouri, Majdal Zoun, and Mazraat Beit al-Sayyad.

The sustained detonations in border settlements were accompanied by heavy bursts of Israeli automatic machine-gun fire directed toward strategic terrain features, including the valleys of Wadi al-Hujair and Wadi al-Saluki. While municipal authorities and local emergency response services confirmed that there were no immediate reports of direct civilian casualties or severe new structural injuries resulting from the overnight shooting and blast waves, the heavy barrage caused widespread panic among local populations returning to border communities.

The sharp resurgence in frontline hostilities occurs against the backdrop of a delicate, US-brokered diplomatic initiative aimed at restoring stability to the border region. Representatives from Beirut and Tel Aviv signed a formal framework formula agreement under American sponsorship in Washington on June 26. The negotiated framework outlines a structured, multi-phase plan designed to facilitate a gradual Israeli military withdrawal from occupied Lebanese territory. In exchange, the Lebanese Armed Forces are slated to assume full, exclusive security responsibility across evacuated border areas, operating alongside international verification bodies to enforce the complete disarmament of non-state military groups, including Hezbollah.

Practical implementation of the agreement's initial phase commenced on July 21, when Lebanese army units officially deployed into the town of Zawtar al-Gharbiyeh, located north of the Litani River. Designated as one of the primary pilot zones under the Washington pact, Zawtar al-Gharbiyeh was intended to serve as a testing ground for verified troop redeployments and the re-establishment of sovereign state authority. However, the physical reality on the ground remains deeply complicated, as Israeli forces maintain control over various strategic positions throughout southern Lebanon. Some of these occupied areas have been held by the Israeli military for decades, while others were seized during the intense fighting of the 2023-2024 conflict and the subsequent major escalation that began earlier this year. During recent offensive operations, Israeli armored columns advanced more than ten kilometers into sovereign Lebanese territory, establishing defensive perimeters and buffer zones that remain active despite diplomatic commitments.

The human cost of the ongoing hostilities continues to mount rapidly across the country. Official casualty statistics released by the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health indicate that Israeli military attacks and bombardments across Lebanon since March 2 have killed at least 4,333 people and left more than 12,236 others injured. Local officials and humanitarian organizations warn that continued military incursions, controlled demolitions, and aerial overflights severely threaten the viability of the US-backed peace framework, discouraging displaced families from returning to pilot zones and risking a broader collapse of the fragile cessation of hostilities.
