Political Tensions Rise as Opposition Reopens Discourse Around President Tinubu's US Asset Forfeiture Case

President Bola Tinubu reaffirmed his deep connection to Nigeria during a meeting with members of the Nigerian Diaspora Medical Association, declaring that despite his extensive professional training and career in the United States, there is no place like home. Reflecting on his early professional life, the President recalled his work experience in accountancy and finance in the United States following his initial training with Deloitte & Touche, making special mention of his early days at the Standard Oil Building in Chicago. Tinubu explained that he chose to return to Nigeria to apply the knowledge and skills he acquired abroad to the development of his home country.

The President's reflective comments coincided with a fresh wave of political confrontation in Nigeria over his decades-old civil forfeiture case in the United States. The controversy reignited after the camp of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar initiated a renewed push for public scrutiny surrounding the matter. Phrank Shaibu, Special Adviser on Public Communication to Atiku Abubakar, publicly challenged the Presidency over its response to the situation. Responding directly to presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga on social media, Shaibu argued that the government should publish official evidence rather than engaging in public rhetorical exchanges. Shaibu suggested that releasing verifiable documents would settle the matter far more effectively than public statements.

The social media exchange followed a strongly worded statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, who accused Atiku Abubakar of allocating significant financial resources toward hiring American lobbying firms to revive a court matter that the Presidency maintains was resolved more than three decades ago. Onanuga criticized the opposition's efforts to draw the attention of United States President Donald Trump and members of the US Congress to Tinubu’s 1993 civil forfeiture proceedings, characterizing the move as an inappropriate attempt to internationalize domestic political disputes.

The presidential spokesman maintained that Nigeria is a sovereign nation and argued that reporting a sitting Nigerian leader to foreign government officials was improper. Onanuga further asserted that the forfeiture issue had been thoroughly litigated, fully explained, and rendered legally and politically moot by the electoral mandates given to Tinubu by voters in Lagos State and across Nigeria. He also countered by referencing past allegations concerning Atiku's own international financial dealings, while assuring the public that President Tinubu remains fully focused on his governance agenda.

The latest political friction originated from statements by Atiku’s media aide, Paul Ibe, who stated that dozens of pages of United States Department of Justice documents concerning historical allegations and a $460,000 forfeiture involving Tinubu were submitted to officials in the United States. The Washington-based lobbying firm Von Batten-Montague-York confirmed its involvement in distributing court filings, affidavits, and judicial records relating to the case to US congressional members and administration officials under a lobbying engagement linked to Atiku.

The legal history surrounding Tinubu’s 1993 civil forfeiture case was previously a central point of argument during legal challenges following the 2023 presidential election. At the time, both Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi argued before the Presidential Election Petition Court that the past proceedings should have disqualified Tinubu from contesting the presidency. However, the tribunal dismissed those arguments, ruling that the historical forfeiture constituted a civil proceeding rather than a criminal conviction.
