The Director of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thought, Sam Amadi, has stated that lasting improvements in national security require holding senior leaders and military commanders accountable, arguing that troop expansion alone cannot resolve systemic security challenges. Speaking during a television interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time program on Friday, the former Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission addressed President Bola Tinubu’s approval for the expansion of the Nigerian Army, pointing out underlying flaws in the current security strategy, institutional morale, and leadership structures.
Amadi asserted that pervasive corruption within the public sector directly weakens operational efficiency, erodes national commitment, and damages public trust. He noted that widespread security threats have resulted in the military being deployed across non-traditional roles, such as basic road management and routine policing, due to the widespread presence of criminal elements across major transportation routes.
According to Amadi, addressing these critical challenges effectively demands a fundamental shift away from merely increasing troop numbers toward enforcing strict leadership accountability, tackling institutional corruption, and rebuilding effective operational strategies.
