Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have taken on an expanded operational role across disaster-stricken districts in Nepal following devastating flash floods, transitioning from mapping tools into active aerial logistics, emergency payload drop units, and recovery equipment.
In Dhading district, drone units deployed heavy-lift aircraft to retrieve human remains from hazardous and inaccessible sectors, successfully airlifting seven bodies from dangerous terrain where conventional ground access was impossible.
The technical deployment marks a significant evolution in Nepal's disaster response since the 2015 earthquake, when international relief agencies primarily introduced drones for initial damage assessment and aerial reconnaissance. An eight-member specialized drone team is utilizing the heavy-lift industrial DJI FlyCart 100 drone, capable of carrying payloads up to 85 kilograms (187 pounds) with an operational range of up to 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) in high-altitude environments.
Beyond heavy cargo recovery, specialized drones are performing crucial tactical roles across the flood zone:
Subsurface and Underground Exploration: Operators navigated drones into the flooded tunnels of the Upper Trishuli-1 hydropower project to locate scores of trapped workers.
Thermal Imaging and Life Detection:Thermal camera-equipped UAVs are surveying riverbanks and debris fields, scanning for heat signatures to locate living survivors in hazardous zones.
Emergency Supply Deliveries: Heavy-payload drones are shuttling essential food and medical aid directly into isolated communities cut off by destroyed bridges and landslides.
The technological interventions come as the broader catastrophe affects approximately 1.6 million people across the region. On the Nepalese side of the border, the death toll has reached nearly 1,100, with approximately 4,000 individuals still unaccounted for. Across the border in southwestern Tibet, Chinese authorities report at least 16 fatalities and 546 missing persons, including 261 foreign nationals.
