Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian called on BRICS member states to counter unilateral economic sanctions and establish a permanent secretariat to enhance the grouping’s operational efficiency during an address at the BRICS Summit in New Delhi on Saturday. According to reports citing the semi-official Tasnim News Agency, Pezeshkian emphasized that structural reform within the organization is vital to accelerate the implementation of decisions and transition member relationships from trade competition to strategic cooperation.
In his address, Pezeshkian outlined three core operational areas that Tehran supports to strengthen the collective weight of the bloc. The first area focuses on strengthening political coordination among member states grounded in the United Nations Charter, mutual respect, and the preservation of national sovereignty. The second area involves expanding trade and economic partnerships through financial mechanisms free from monopolistic instruments and external currency dominance. The third area emphasizes deepening multilateral collaboration across energy markets, technology transfer, scientific innovation, and food security initiatives designed to benefit developing nations.
Turning to international security, the Iranian leader described the defense of Palestinian self-determination as a critical measure of the legitimacy and credibility of global governance frameworks. Pezeshkian stated that any durable resolution requires full respect for the national will of the Palestinian population. He urged BRICS to leverage its position as a representative voice for the Global South to take a more active role in advocating for the end of occupation and the protection of legitimate rights.
