Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi met with visiting International Energy Agency Executive Director Fatih Birol in Tokyo on Monday to address global energy market stability and supply chain security.
During the bilateral talks, Takaichi expressed Japan's intention to promote its POWERR GX initiative internationally to enhance the resilience of global energy supply and demand frameworks. The domestic policy package focuses on reinforcing the stability of conventional fossil fuel procurement while accelerating implementation of Japan's broader Green Transformation agenda.
Advocacy for Three Pillars of Global Energy Stability
The Japanese prime minister reiterated Tokyo's call for international alignment around three core principles to ensure energy security. These pillars encompass maintaining open and transparent energy commerce, strengthening multilateral coordination on strategic petroleum reserve management, and fostering structured dialogue between energy-producing and energy-consuming nations.
Birol commended Japan's strategic energy framework, including the POWERR Asia and POWERR GX initiatives, and confirmed that the International Energy Agency will collaborate closely with Japanese authorities to maintain market equilibrium and mitigate global supply risks.
Critical Minerals Cooperation and Diplomatic Engagement
Delegates also reviewed initiatives to diversify international energy procurement sources and strengthen supply chain dependencies for critical minerals essential to technical and industrial infrastructure. Both sides agreed to maintain joint oversight given ongoing instability across key production and transit corridors.
In a separate diplomatic session, Birol met with Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi. Their discussions centered on increasing the representation of Japanese technical experts within the International Energy Agency and formalizing intergovernmental measures to secure resilient critical mineral supply lines.
