United States President Donald Trump and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung held a thirty-minute bilateral summit on Tuesday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
According to statements from South Korean National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac, the two heads of state welcomed significant progress in negotiations regarding major bilateral investment projects. The discussions followed a detailed briefing delivered by South Korea’s Industry Ministry to domestic lawmakers outlining implementation protocols for a $350 billion strategic investment package between Washington and Seoul. While the meeting occurred against a backdrop of increasing diplomatic pressure from Washington for Seoul to contribute military assets to maritime security operations in the Strait of Hormuz, South Korean officials confirmed that the deployment issue was not raised during the session, maintaining President Lee's stated position against committing combat forces to overseas conflicts.
Defense Cooperation, Nuclear Security, and Operational Control
The talks encompassed sensitive bilateral security initiatives, including Seoul's long-standing pursuit of nuclear-powered submarines, rights to enrich uranium, and capabilities to reprocess spent nuclear fuel for defense and energy applications.
Delegates also reviewed ongoing plans for the eventual transfer of wartime operational control of South Korean forces from Washington to Seoul, alongside expanding industrial cooperation in commercial and military naval shipbuilding. Both leadership teams emphasized that joint defense industrial partnerships remain critical for maintaining stable deterrent capabilities across the Indo-Pacific region.
Diplomatic Engagement with North Korea and China
During the summit, President Lee requested that the United States take active steps toward resuming high-level diplomatic dialogue with Pyongyang. President Trump responded positively, reiterating his personal commitment to engagement and citing his established working relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
President Lee also noted the regional significance of an upcoming bilateral summit scheduled between President Trump and Chinese leadership, expressing optimism that constructive dialogue between Washington and Beijing would foster broader geopolitical stability and enhance South Korea-China diplomatic relations.
