The World Meteorological Organization issued its annual Air Quality and Climate Bulletin, warning that increasing wildfires and intense heat waves are reversing decades of progress in air quality management and posing severe risks to global health and ecosystems.
The report underscores the feedback loops between climate change and air pollution, noting that rising global temperatures exacerbate conditions that trigger extreme weather events.
While regulations in North America and Europe have successfully lowered industrial and vehicular emissions of fine particulate matter, exposure to fire-related fine particulate matter has risen sharply. Extreme fire-smoke events have tripled globally since the 1990s, contributing to an estimated 100,000 additional deaths annually between 2010 and 2018.
Conventional air quality risk assessments based solely on total particulate mass may underestimate wildfire-related mortality by up to 93 percent because they fail to account for the significantly higher toxicity of fire-derived particulate matter. The World Meteorological Organization noted that meeting World Health Organization air quality guidelines will become progressively harder as extreme fire weather increases.
Heat waves compound atmospheric degradation by accelerating ground-level ozone formation through high temperatures, stagnant air, and intense sunlight. Ozone-related health risks are projected to cause tens of thousands of additional premature deaths globally, particularly from respiratory illnesses.
The UN agency emphasized the need for comprehensive atmospheric monitoring beyond standard pollutants. Soot deposits from black carbon on ice and snow reduce surface reflectivity, accelerating glacial melting and reinforcing climate feedback loops.
Additionally, mismanaged plastic waste has created airborne microplastic cycles, with models estimating 51 million tonnes on land and 22 million tonnes in oceans acting as potential sources for atmospheric transport to remote ecosystems. The agency called for unified, complementary policies addressing air quality and climate change together, stressing that neither can be mitigated in isolation.
