It is really instructive to say that vengeance is of the Lord and so therefore, you don’t need to act to satisfy your selfish ends. During the transfiguration of our Lord Jesus Christ, Elijah and Moses were seen with Jesus (Matthew 17:3) Moses represents the law, Elijah on the other hand represents the prophets and Jesus fulfills the two – the law and the prophets. The implication is that the teaching of Jesus Christ is now the only source of pleasing God. Jesus in His teachings gives clearer understanding on the Law of Moses, since He did not come to abolish the law (Matthew 5:17). The Mosaic Law if truly followed leaves the world with many wounded and partially bind people.
Jesus in essence was saying that forgiveness is superior to vengeance. It is only genuine love for Christ that can enable one abide by this teaching of our Lord Jesus. By human analysis, the teachings seem to make one look stupid and foolish, but since our Lord practiced it, we can do it. It is important to note that you should not seek redress or ask for your right. What it is saying is that in doing so, you must be guided by the leading of the Lord and as far He allows you to go. This is because you have the Holy Spirit who can guide you. Let God avenge for you.
