President Vladimir Putin has temporarily suspended officials named in a
World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) report over claims of doping at the
2014 Sochi Olympic Games.
"Officials named in the Commission’s report as direct perpetrators will be temporarily suspended from their posts until the investigation is over," said Putin on Monday.
Earlier in the day, WADA released a report in which it claimed the Russian Sports Ministry was complicit in the manipulation of doping samples with the assistance of the Federal Security Service (FSB).
The investigation behind the report is based on allegations made by the former head of the Moscow Anti-Doping Laboratory, Grigory Rodchenkov, during a New York Times interview.
"But prior to making the final decision on the officials’ in question, we are asking WADA to provide more detailed and objective information based on facts so that Russian law enforcers and investigative bodies could use it in their work,” noted Putin.
Putin went on to warn that the claims against Russian athletes are based on the words of a “single person with a scandalous reputation.”
He noted that such actions are attempts “to turn sport into an instrument of geopolitical pressure” and “form a negative image of countries and people.”
