An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale has struck northwestern China, with no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the quake, whose epicenter was in a sparsely-populated area of Yushu prefecture and relatively deep at 32 kilometers, struck the northwestern province of Qinghai on Monday.
There was a “low likelihood of casualties and damage,” it said.
In April 2010, nearly 2,700 people lost their lives and an over 12,000 others were injured after a 6.9-magnitude earthquake jolted Yushu.
Yushu was also struck by a 5.3-magnitude quake in 2011.The region, situated on the remote Qinghai-Tibetan plateau, is largely inhabited by ethnic Tibetans.
The China Earthquake Network Centre gave the latest tremor a magnitude of 6.2 and a depth of nine kilometers, with its epicenter in Zadoi County.
