Senator Neda Imasuen, who represents Edo South Senatorial District, has formally left the Labour Party (LP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), citing persistent internal conflicts within the LP and the need to secure stronger political leverage for his constituents.
The announcement was made on Wednesday during Senate plenary, where Senate President Godswill Akpabio read out Imasuen’s resignation letter.
“This decision follows extensive consultations with my constituents and stakeholders,” Imasuen stated in the letter, adding that the move to the APC would provide “greater visibility and opportunities” for Edo South under the current administration.
He explained that ongoing leadership tussles within the Labour Party had hindered his ability to deliver effectively on campaign promises and meet the expectations of those he represents.
Reiterating his commitment to democratic values, Imasuen said his defection aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and pledged that the interests of his constituents would continue to guide his legislative actions.
The defection marks a significant blow to the Labour Party, which has been grappling with internal strife and a wave of defections ahead of the 2027 general elections.
