With political alignments already taking shape ahead of the 2027 presidential election, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, on Wednesday visited former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, at his office in Abuja.
The meeting forms part of a series of strategic engagements by opposition figures working to assemble a strong political alliance capable of challenging the dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next general election.
This latest development follows closely on the heels of Obi’s closed-door session with former Kano State Governor, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, held at Shekarau’s residence in Asokoro, Abuja.
Both Malami and Shekarau are among a growing list of influential political actors reportedly being approached as part of evolving talks aimed at opposition realignment. Other prominent individuals linked to the discussions include former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi.
The push for unity stems from the outcome of the 2023 presidential election, where President Bola Ahmed Tinubu secured the presidency under the APC with 8.8 million votes. His nearest challengers, Atiku and Obi, placed second and third respectively, but failed to mount a unified front capable of dislodging the APC.
Political commentators and civil society groups have since argued that a fractured opposition would once again be at a disadvantage unless cohesive efforts are made to consolidate political strength.
Although details of Obi’s meeting with Malami have not been disclosed, sources within the Labour Party confirmed that the visit is part of an ongoing “opposition unity tour” aimed at strengthening alliances and preparing for a more coordinated campaign as the 2027 race draws nearer.
