President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared that Nigerian states are now financially self-sufficient and no longer depend on the Federal Government to meet their salary obligations.
He made the assertion during his address to a joint session of the National Assembly on Thursday in celebration of Democracy Day 2025.
The President pointed to improvements in the country’s economic indicators as a sign of progress, reaffirming a positive balance of payments and a strengthened sovereign credit rating.
In his words, “The state does not need to go about paying salaries anymore.”
He attributed this development to policy initiatives aimed at boosting both oil and non-oil exports, expanding access to credit, and increasing internally generated revenue at the subnational level.
He praised the resilience of Nigeria’s democratic institutions and called for continued unity and support across all levels of government to sustain national growth and stability.
