Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has approved the immediate implementation of a six-month maternity leave for female civil servants in the state. The announcement was made during the launch of the Kebbi State Food and Nutrition Policy and the Multi-Sectoral Plan of Action on Nutrition (MSPAN) in Birnin Kebbi.
The governor revealed that a bill will soon be sent to the State House of Assembly to formally legislate the new maternity leave policy, aimed at supporting maternal and child health across the state workforce.
In a major step to address rising cases of malnutrition, Idris also disclosed the state’s approval of UNICEF’s funding request for nutrition support. He announced that the Kebbi State Government will contribute N500 million, while the 21 local government councils will provide N261 million, bringing the total commitment to N761 million.
The funds will be paid into a UNICEF-managed account and used to procure key nutrition commodities, including micronutrient supplements, lipid-based nutrient supplements, and ready-to-use therapeutic food. These efforts are targeted at preventing and treating child malnutrition in Kebbi.
The governor directed the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to release the council funds by Friday, while instructing the Commissioner for Finance to promptly disburse the state’s share.
Reaffirming his administration’s dedication to improving food security and nutrition, Idris emphasized that the initiatives are part of a broader plan to improve the health and well-being of Kebbi’s children and families.
Speaking at the event, representatives from UNICEF commended the government’s support and highlighted the importance of the investment in reversing malnutrition trends. Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Dr. Abba Sani-Kalgo, also praised the governor’s proactive leadership on food and nutrition policy.
