The Kano State Government has approved the creation of a Mobilisation Taskforce on Voter Registration to drive wider citizen participation in the ongoing registration exercise, underlining its commitment to strengthening democratic engagement across the state.
A statement issued on Wednesday by Musa Tanko Muhammad, Press Secretary to the Office of the Secretary to the State Government, explained that the high-level taskforce will be inaugurated at a later date by the Secretary to the State Government and chaired by the State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya.
According to the statement, “The Taskforce is not a mere administrative arrangement but a decisive step towards promoting participatory democracy and ensuring that every eligible Kano citizen registers to vote.”
The government noted that the initiative is intended to secure full compliance with the directives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). It will also mobilise support from diverse sectors, including traditional rulers, civil society organisations, political parties, trade unions, youth associations and women’s groups, in order to align community structures with government efforts.
The statement further described voter registration as “not simply a routine exercise but a civic duty of extraordinary weight, a gateway to shaping the future of governance and ensuring that the voices of the people of Kano are heard at the ballot boxes.”
Residents of the state were called upon to participate actively in the process and to work with the Taskforce to ensure that every eligible voter is given the opportunity to register, a step the government considers crucial to advancing inclusive democracy and transparent electoral practices.
