The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has entered into a partnership with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to combat the growing menace of drug abuse among young people in Edo State.
The collaboration was formally announced on Wednesday at the 2025 Adolescent Lifestyle Programme in Benin, organised by the NNPC under the theme: “Empowered Choices, Safer Futures: Guiding Adolescents to Healthy Living.”
The gathering drew adolescents, teachers, health professionals and community leaders who came together to discuss the dangers of substance abuse and to encourage healthier lifestyle decisions among young people.
Edo State Commander of the NDLEA, Mitchell Ofoyeju, while addressing the audience, described adolescents as particularly vulnerable to drug use, peer pressure and the pervasive influence of the internet, which, if unchecked, could derail their future.
“We are excited about this collaboration with NNPC, which reflects our shared commitment to nurturing a healthier, drug-free generation. Adolescents are exposed to risks both online and offline, which is why programmes such as this are essential in providing them with the resources and guidance to navigate life’s challenges,” Ofoyeju said.
He drew attention to the psychological and social costs of drug use, noting that resilience, peer support and deliberate decision-making were necessary safeguards for young people against substance dependence.
NNPC’s Manager of Operations, Dr Okanta Emefiele, in his remarks, restated the corporation’s dedication to youth development. He explained that supporting adolescents in matters of health and empowerment was central to building a safer and more resilient society.
The programme included a series of workshops facilitated by experts in health, sexuality education and online safety. In addition, Mr Sam Offiah, Benin Zonal Commander of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, led a session on migration and human trafficking.
Interactive group activities also gave participants the opportunity to share experiences and learn practical strategies for resisting drug-related pressures.
