Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, has declared that the party is preparing to mount a strong opposition against President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking in Lagos during the inauguration of the PDP Screening Committee for prospective party executives in the state, George stated that the PDP is currently undergoing significant internal restructuring aimed at restoring its relevance and reconnecting with voters.
“We are not joking. We will give Tinubu and his party a tough fight in 2027. We are reorganising, we are rebuilding, and we are returning power to the people,” he told party members gathered at the event.
The PDP chieftain, known for his outspoken criticism of the APC-led government, attributed past electoral defeats to internal sabotage, greed, and the erosion of party discipline.
“Our party was nearly wrecked by greed and disloyalty. Too many people saw the party as a platform for personal gain rather than public service. That is changing now,” he said.
George called on the Lagos PDP to cleanse itself of opportunists, warning that individuals who treat the party as a vehicle for self-enrichment had weakened its core ideals.
“This is not the time for politics as usual. It’s time for serious introspection. We must know who is truly for us and who is for their own pockets,” he remarked.
The newly constituted screening committee has been tasked with evaluating all aspirants seeking leadership positions at the ward, local government, and state levels. The move is part of a broader push to restore internal order and credibility within the party’s ranks.
Speaking at the same forum, the Chairman of the screening committee, Dr Ade Dosumu, pledged a fair, transparent, and merit-based process.
“This is not just about screening names. It is about repositioning the PDP in Lagos and across the country. We are going back to the people, our real strength lies at the grassroots,” he said.
He continued: “We are going to be thorough. No more imposition. No more political jobbers sneaking in through the back door.”
Dosumu noted that loyalty, competence, and integrity would be the guiding principles for selecting new party executives, insisting that the committee would not bow to external pressure.
Bode George maintained that the PDP’s survival and future depend on restoring internal justice and inclusive politics, cautioning against repeating past mistakes.
“We must rebuild trust. We must stop imposing candidates. We must allow the people to choose their leaders freely and fairly. That is the only way we can stand a chance against Tinubu’s political machinery,” he said.
