Vice President Kashim Shettima has called on Nigerians to prioritise tolerance, unity, and peaceful coexistence, emphasising that the country’s shared heritage and common bonds far outweigh the factors that divide its people.
Shettima made the appeal on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, in Jos, Plateau State, during a courtesy visit to the Gbong Gwom Jos and Chairman of the Plateau State Council of Chiefs and Emirs, HRH Jacob Gyang Buba.
In a statement issued by the Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Stanley Nkwocha, the Vice President said Nigeria has immense potential to become one of the world’s greatest nations if citizens commit to living together in harmony. “We are all connected one way or the other. We must, therefore, continue to live together. What binds us together supersedes what separates us,” Shettima stated.
He described traditional rulers as indispensable pillars of nation-building, highlighting their respected role in promoting peace and stability at the grassroots level. “They are not just custodians of our cultural heritage; they help in upholding society by preaching peace among their subjects,” he said.
The Vice President was in Jos for the grand reception of Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang and other political leaders who recently joined the All Progressives Congress (APC). He commended the improving relationship between Governor Mutfwang and the APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, describing the political realignment as a positive development for the state.
“There can be no development without peace. With their coming together, the state will enjoy more peace and dividends of democracy,” Shettima said. He expressed optimism that the cooperation would strengthen Plateau State’s image, foster lasting peace, and contribute to national stability.
The Vice President also thanked the Plateau State Government and residents for the warm hospitality extended to him and his entourage during the visit.
Earlier, Governor Caleb Mutfwang praised the strong working relationship between President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, noting that it continues to benefit the nation as a whole.
In his remarks, the Gbong Gwom Jos, HRH Jacob Gyang Buba, appreciated the efforts of security agencies in Plateau State but called for intensified security measures and genuine reconciliation across the state and other parts of the country. “I appreciate what our security agencies are doing, but there is need for more security and true reconciliation,” the monarch said.
The visit and statements reflect ongoing efforts by the federal government to promote national unity, peacebuilding, and political harmony amid challenges in various regions of the country.
