Ughelli, Delta State — Comrade Reuben Izeze, Delta State's Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), has reiterated the administration's zero-tolerance for substandard execution, declaring that no contractor will receive payment until projects fully meet approved specifications and deliver true value for money.
The commissioner made the statement during a weekend on-site inspection of the Edion Road project in Oteri-Ughelli, Ughelli North Local Government Area. Despite the contractor's claim that the work was complete, Izeze's team identified several critical defects and non-compliance issues that require immediate rectification.
"Quality and adherence to specifications are non-negotiable," Izeze emphasized. "Completion claims alone do not qualify a project for certification or payment—only verified work that matches the approved standards does."
He highlighted that his personal presence on the site, even over the weekend, reflects Governor Sheriff Oborevwori's firm stance on accountability and prudent use of public funds. "When you see me here, you're seeing the Governor's unwavering commitment: no free lunch for contractors. Every kobo must correspond to work done strictly according to the bill of quantities and engineering standards," he said.
Izeze pointed out specific shortcomings observed on the Edion Road project, including aspects of drainage construction that were unclear or improperly executed. He directed the contractor to address these issues promptly, stating that the project would remain uncertified until all corrections are made to specification.
The commissioner reassured residents of Oteri-Ughelli and neighboring communities that the Oborevwori-led administration remains dedicated to delivering durable, high-quality road infrastructure that genuinely benefits the people. He described the intensified inspections as a key strategy to ensure lasting legacy projects that withstand time and serve the public effectively.
This latest oversight aligns with the state's broader push under the M.O.R.E Agenda for transparent, people-centered development, where infrastructure delivery prioritizes durability, safety, and accountability over rushed or compromised execution.
