Traditional rulers across Delta State have thrown their weight behind the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, calling on citizens to sustain their support for the government’s programmes and policies as a means of consolidating developmental gains recorded so far.
The endorsement came during a high-profile gathering of monarchs drawn from the three senatorial districts of the state. The event, which held at Odogwu Hall within the Orodje Palace in Oerokpe, served as a platform for dialogue, reflection, and renewed commitment to collaboration between traditional institutions and the state government.
The meeting brought together a significant number of first-class and officially recognized traditional rulers, underscoring the importance of unity among custodians of culture and their collective influence in shaping public opinion and grassroots mobilization.
Presiding over the gathering was the Chairman of the Delta State Traditional Rulers Council and the Orodje of Okpe Kingdom, Felix Mujakperuo, a retired Major General, who played host to his colleagues from across the state. His leadership at the event highlighted the central role of the Traditional Rulers Council in fostering cooperation between the monarchy and government institutions.
Traditional rulers from Delta North Senatorial District attended under the leadership of their Chairman and Leader, Emmanuel Efeizomor II, who is also the immediate past Chairman of the State Traditional Rulers Council. Their presence added weight to the deliberations, reflecting a unified front among the monarchs regardless of district affiliations.
Speaking to journalists shortly after the meeting, the Obi and Paramount Ruler of Abavo Kingdom, Uche Irenuma, addressed the press on behalf of the Delta North traditional rulers. He expressed strong appreciation for the performance of the state governor, commending what he described as rapid and visible strides in economic transformation, infrastructural development, and people-centered governance.
According to him, the impact of the administration is evident across Delta State, with notable improvements in road construction, public infrastructure, and socio-economic initiatives designed to improve the quality of life for residents. He stressed that such achievements should not only be recognized but actively supported by the populace to ensure continuity and expansion.
“The governor’s developmental footprint is visible in all three senatorial districts,” the monarch noted, emphasizing that the benefits of governance must be sustained through collective effort and cooperation from citizens at all levels.
He further called on Deltans, irrespective of political leanings, ethnic identities, or social standing, to rally behind the current administration. He argued that governance thrives best in an atmosphere of unity, shared purpose, and mutual understanding, warning that division could undermine ongoing progress.
In his remarks, the Abavo monarch also underscored the importance of political stability as a foundation for sustainable development. He advocated for continuity in governance, urging residents to support Governor Oborevwori for a second term in office.
He explained that such continuity would reinforce the long-standing informal power-sharing arrangement among the three senatorial districts, particularly the governorship rotation system, which has played a crucial role in maintaining balance and fairness in the state’s political landscape.
Describing the arrangement as an unwritten but respected understanding among political stakeholders, he noted that it has contributed significantly to peace, cooperation, and mutual respect within Delta State’s political class.
He cautioned that any disruption to this delicate balance could generate avoidable tensions, potentially threatening the stability that the state has enjoyed over the years. Conversely, he argued that maintaining the arrangement would deepen trust among stakeholders and strengthen democratic institutions.
“The preservation of this system is vital for the overall good of Delta State,” he said, urging political actors and citizens alike to remain committed to sustaining the framework that has helped ensure equitable representation and harmony.
Beyond political advocacy, the traditional rulers also reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining peace and stability within their respective domains. They emphasized their unique position as custodians of culture and grassroots leaders, noting that their closeness to the people enables them to effectively promote unity and resolve conflicts at the community level.
The monarchs highlighted their readiness to continue partnering with the state government in advancing development initiatives, particularly in areas such as security, community engagement, and social cohesion.
They stressed that traditional institutions remain vital in bridging the gap between government and the grassroots, serving as trusted intermediaries who can mobilize support, disseminate information, and foster understanding among local populations.
Observers note that the collective endorsement by the traditional rulers is likely to carry significant influence, given their moral authority and deep-rooted presence in communities across Delta State.
The gathering at Orodje Palace not only reinforced the alignment between traditional institutions and the current administration but also sent a strong message about the importance of unity, continuity, and shared responsibility in governance.
As Delta State continues to pursue its development agenda, the support of traditional rulers may prove instrumental in sustaining momentum, ensuring stability, and fostering an environment conducive to growth and progress.
