Gunmen have carried out a deadly attack on Olegabulu community in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State, killing a traditional ruler, his wife, son, and several other residents in an incident that has left the area in shock and mourning.
The attack, which occurred on Thursday night, April 23, 2026, saw armed assailants storm the community, unleashing violence that claimed multiple lives and heightened tension across the locality.
Local sources confirmed that among those killed was Chief Momo Alexander Awodi, the traditional ruler of Olegabulu, alongside his wife, Abigail Awodi, and their son, Boniface Ochowechi. Other victims identified include Mr. Ochowechi Ochegwu and Mrs. Deborah Ochowechi.
Residents said the attackers moved through the community under the cover of darkness, leaving what witnesses described as a trail of destruction. The incident has further deepened concerns about insecurity in parts of Benue State, where communities have faced recurring violence in recent years.
A resident who spoke on condition of anonymity suggested that the nature of the attack has raised questions about the identity of the perpetrators. According to the source, the circumstances surrounding the incident do not clearly point to the type of attacks commonly associated with armed herders.
“From what we are seeing, this does not look like a herdsman’s attack. Olegabulu is located between two communities, and there have been underlying tensions,” the resident said.
The source added that some individuals were reportedly seen moving through the village square shortly before the attack and greeted locals in the Agatu dialect, a detail that has contributed to speculation that the assailants may have been familiar with the area.
“Some people were seen passing through the village square and they greeted them in Agatu. That is why many are confused about what really happened,” the resident added.
The Chairman of Agatu Local Government Area, Melvin Ejeh, confirmed the killings and described the incident as tragic and devastating. He appealed to residents to remain calm and refrain from taking retaliatory action, warning that such responses could further escalate tensions in the area.
“I urge our people to remain calm and not take the law into their hands. Security agencies have been mobilized, and investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for this heinous act,” he said.
Authorities say security operatives have been deployed to the community and surrounding areas to restore order and begin investigations into the attack. However, as of the time of filing this report, no arrests had been announced, and the motive behind the killings remains unclear.
Community leaders and residents have expressed grief over the loss of the traditional ruler and his family, noting that the attack represents not only a personal tragedy but also a significant blow to the social structure of the community.
The killing of a traditional leader is often seen as a destabilising event, given the role such figures play in maintaining peace, resolving disputes, and fostering unity within rural communities. Observers say the incident could have wider implications for stability in the area if not swiftly addressed.
Benue State has in the past experienced episodes of violence linked to communal disputes, land conflicts, and other security challenges. The latest attack has renewed calls for stronger security measures and proactive conflict resolution mechanisms to prevent further bloodshed.
Residents are now calling on both state and federal authorities to intensify efforts to protect lives and property, as well as to ensure that those responsible for the attack are brought to justice.
As investigations continue, the community remains on edge, with many families grieving and others fearful of potential further attacks. Security agencies are expected to provide updates as more details emerge about the incident and the identity of those behind it.
