Harry Maguire has signed a new contract with Manchester United, extending his stay at Old Trafford after months of negotiations, the club confirmed.
The England defender has agreed to a one-year extension, with an option for the club to extend the deal by a further 12 months, ensuring he remains with Manchester United beyond the summer when his previous contract was due to expire.
Maguire had been set to become a free agent at the end of the current season, but discussions between his representatives and the club intensified in recent months, leading to the new agreement. Reports indicate that the new deal includes a reduction from his previous £180,000-per-week wages, reflecting a compromise reached during negotiations.
Speaking after signing the new contract, Maguire expressed pride in continuing his journey with Manchester United, describing the opportunity as a major honour.
“Representing Manchester United is the ultimate honour,” Maguire said.
“It is a responsibility that makes myself and my family proud every single day.
“I am delighted to extend my journey at this incredible club to at least eight seasons and continue to play in front of our special supporters to create more amazing moments together.
“You can feel the ambition and potential of this exciting squad. The determination throughout the whole club to fight for major trophies is clear for everyone to see, and I am confident that our best moments together remain ahead of us.”
The contract extension comes after Maguire successfully re-established himself as a key figure in the team under manager Michael Carrick. The defender had previously faced an uncertain future at Old Trafford following a period where he lost his starting position and his role within the squad.
However, improved performances and consistent displays helped Maguire regain the trust of the coaching staff and secure a regular place in the starting lineup. His resurgence also contributed to his return to the England national football team squad.
Manchester United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, praised Maguire’s professionalism and leadership qualities following the announcement.
“Harry represents the mentality and resilience required to perform for Manchester United. He is the ultimate professional who brings invaluable experience and leadership to our young, ambitious squad,” Wilcox said.
“Harry, like everyone at the club, is completely determined to help Manchester United to achieve regular and sustained success.”
Maguire joined Manchester United from Leicester City in 2019 for a then-world-record fee for a defender, quickly becoming a regular starter and later captain of the club. During his time at Old Trafford, he has experienced both highs and challenges, including criticism over performances and competition for places in defence.
Despite those challenges, Maguire’s recent form has strengthened his position within the squad and convinced the club to extend his contract. His experience is seen as important for a team that is currently blending younger players with senior figures.
The defender’s extension also provides stability in Manchester United’s defensive lineup as the club aims to compete for major honours domestically and in Europe. Club officials believe Maguire’s leadership and experience will be valuable as the team continues its rebuilding process.
Maguire’s new deal ensures continuity at a time when Manchester United is seeking consistency and improved results. The club has emphasized ambition and long-term planning, with Maguire’s extension seen as part of that broader strategy.
With the new contract now confirmed, Maguire is expected to continue playing a central role in Manchester United’s defensive setup as the club looks to push for silverware and build momentum in the coming seasons.
