The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has stated that he is currently one of the most criticised politicians in Nigeria, noting that the level of attacks directed at him has been persistent since he assumed office.
Wike made the remark during a media chat where he addressed journalists on governance, revenue generation, and ongoing development reforms across Federal Capital Territory. The press session, which was covered by TVC News and monitored by Politics Nigeria, featured the minister responding to questions on his administration’s performance and policy direction.
During the interaction, Wike expressed concern over what he described as sustained criticism and attacks on his leadership and policies, insisting that he has remained focused on delivering results despite the pressure.
“I think no politician has received more abuse than I have. I think, after the president, I am the one receiving the highest level of abuse,” Wike said.
The minister explained that the criticisms have continued even as his administration pursues reforms aimed at improving governance and accelerating development within the FCT. According to him, many of the attacks are politically motivated and not based on objective evaluation of his performance.
Wike, who assumed office as FCT minister following his appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noted that leadership decisions, particularly those involving reforms, often attract resistance from individuals affected by changes in established systems.
He stated that despite the opposition, his administration remains committed to strengthening governance structures and ensuring efficient service delivery to residents of Abuja and surrounding area councils.
The minister also addressed issues relating to Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), emphasizing that improving revenue collection remains a top priority for his administration. He explained that enhanced revenue generation is necessary to fund critical infrastructure projects and sustain development across the FCT.
According to Wike, previous revenue challenges limited the pace of development in the territory, but his administration has introduced reforms to improve transparency and accountability in revenue collection.
He added that improved IGR would enable the government to execute more capital projects, including road construction, urban renewal initiatives, and development projects in the area councils.
Wike highlighted several ongoing projects across Abuja, noting that road construction and rehabilitation efforts are currently underway in different parts of the city. He also mentioned development initiatives in satellite towns and rural communities within the FCT.
The minister explained that his administration is prioritizing infrastructure development to address long-standing challenges in transportation, urban planning, and service delivery.
He further disclosed that area councils are also benefiting from new development initiatives aimed at improving living conditions and expanding economic opportunities for residents.
Wike stressed that his administration is focused on delivering visible and measurable results within a short period, adding that the public would continue to witness progress across different sectors.
Despite the criticism, the minister maintained that he remains undeterred and committed to his responsibilities. He stated that leadership requires resilience and determination, particularly when implementing reforms that may initially be unpopular.
Wike emphasized that he would not allow negative comments or political attacks to distract him from his duties, reiterating his commitment to serving the public interest.
