Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has been honoured with two major awards at the 25th anniversary celebration of Independent Newspapers, in recognition of his administration’s performance, particularly in urban renewal and infrastructure development.
The governor clinched the awards for Outstanding Independent Governor and Best Independent Governor in Urban Renewal of the Year 2025 during a high-profile ceremony held Saturday night at Eko Hotels and Suites. The event, themed “Game Changers: Breaking Barriers, Shaping Tomorrow,” formed part of activities marking the organisation’s silver jubilee celebration.
Governor Oborevwori, who was represented at the ceremony by his deputy, Monday Onyeme, described the recognition as a strong endorsement of his administration’s development agenda and its commitment to improving the lives of Deltans. Speaking with journalists shortly after receiving the awards on behalf of the governor, Onyeme said the honours reflected the tangible progress made across the state since the administration assumed office in 2023.
According to him, the awards serve as validation of the government’s efforts in transforming Delta State’s urban landscape and addressing long-standing infrastructural challenges. He noted that the governor’s leadership has brought about visible and measurable improvements, particularly in key urban centres.
“It is very evident to Nigerians, especially the people of Delta State, that the governor has changed the narrative since he came into office,” Onyeme said. “Today, he stands out as one of the best-performing governors in the area of urban renewal. The impact of his administration is not only visible but also widely acknowledged.”
The deputy governor highlighted the scale of infrastructural transformation taking place across the state, pointing out that Delta, as one of Nigeria’s most urbanised states, has experienced rapid development within a relatively short period. He referenced several ongoing and completed projects aimed at improving transportation, reducing congestion, and enhancing the overall functionality of urban areas.
Among the key projects cited were multiple flyover constructions in strategic locations such as Ughelli, Warri, Effurun, and Enerhen Junction. These projects, he explained, have significantly improved traffic flow in previously congested areas while also contributing to the modernization and beautification of the cities.
In addition to the flyover projects, Onyeme disclosed that the administration had delivered approximately 300 kilometres of road infrastructure within a single year. He described this achievement as a major milestone in efforts to bridge infrastructure gaps and improve connectivity across communities in the state.
“When independent organisations carry out assessments and recognise the work being done, it does not come as a surprise,” he added. “The results are there for everyone to see, and they speak for themselves.”
Onyeme further stated that the awards would not only serve as recognition of past achievements but also as motivation for the government to intensify its efforts in delivering more dividends of democracy. He reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to sustaining the pace of development and ensuring that projects are completed to the highest standards.
“We have not rested, and we do not intend to rest,” he said. “We were elected to serve the people, and we remain fully committed to that responsibility. The more trust and responsibility the people place on us, the more determined we are to deliver on our mandate.”
The deputy governor also attributed the governor’s performance to his passion for public service and his deep connection to the people of Delta State. According to him, Oborevwori is focused on leaving a lasting legacy that will stand the test of time and set a benchmark for future administrations.
“He is driven by a desire to ensure that by the end of his tenure, the difference will be clear and undeniable,” Onyeme noted. “He wants to establish a standard that subsequent governments will be expected to meet or even surpass.”
Earlier in the programme, the Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of Independent Newspapers, Steve Omanufeme, congratulated all award recipients and commended them for their contributions to national development. He explained that the selection process for the awards involved a combination of public voting and rigorous evaluation by a panel of judges, as well as the organisation’s board.
Omanufeme noted that the awards were designed to recognise individuals and institutions that have demonstrated excellence, innovation, and impact in their respective fields. He emphasized that the silver jubilee celebration was not only an opportunity to honour outstanding achievements but also a moment to reflect on the organisation’s journey over the past 25 years.
He further announced that additional activities to mark the milestone anniversary would continue later in the year, with a special event scheduled for October to bring together key stakeholders, partners, and distinguished guests.
The recognition of Governor Oborevwori at the anniversary event underscores the growing importance of performance-based assessments in governance, as media organisations and civil society groups increasingly highlight achievements and hold leaders accountable.
For Delta State, the awards represent both a celebration of progress and a reminder of the expectations that come with leadership. As the administration continues to implement its development agenda, stakeholders will be watching closely to see how it builds on its current momentum and addresses the evolving needs of the state’s population.
