The Indigenous People of Biafra has issued a stern public statement distancing itself from individuals parading themselves as commanders of the Eastern Security Network (ESN) on social media platforms. In a release issued Tuesday, May 5, 2026, by spokesperson Comrade Emma Powerful, the group clarified that the ESN operates under a strict, centralized internal command and does not issue operational directives via public online platforms. The statement aims to neutralize what IPOB describes as a coordinated campaign of state-sponsored sabotage and opportunistic fraud. Powerful asserted that ESN does not take orders online, labeling those issuing fake directives on platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, and X as infiltrators and enemies of Biafra restoration seeking to fracture public trust and create disorder.
Powerful utilized the statement to highlight the strategic origins of the ESN, framing the organization as a proactive indigenous defense structure designed by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to prevent the displacement of indigenous populations. The group drew sharp comparisons to other regions in Nigeria, suggesting that without the ESN, the Southeast would have faced a fate similar to the ancient Hausa Kingdoms or the displaced communities currently in the Middle Belt. He saw what happened in Ilorin, the statement read, referring to the historical shift of power in the 19th century. He saw indigenous communities in the Middle Belt displaced and ancestral lands overtaken. He refused to allow Biafraland to become the next chapter in that history.
IPOB argued that Kanu’s current detention is a direct consequence of his decision to build a shield while political elites remained silent or compromised. The group maintained that while northern and central regions of Nigeria continue to suffer from significant insecurity and community displacement, the Southeast remains standing specifically because of the ESN's presence. History will record that while others debated semantics and negotiated surrender, Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu built a shield, the spokesperson added, insisting that the group drew a line where other regional institutions hesitated.
Reiterating the group’s commitment to internal discipline, Powerful emphasized that the ESN functions silently, effectively, and without public theatre. He contrasted the noise of social media impersonators with the actual conduct of ESN units, which he claimed do not advertise operations or perform for clout. The public is advised to disregard every social media audio and broadcast claiming to emanate from the ESN, Powerful stated. ESN answers to command, not clout. The group reaffirmed that despite Kanu’s ongoing incarceration, the IPOB movement remains one indivisible movement under one central authority with an intact mission.
The statement also serves as a critique of the broader Nigerian security architecture and the political class. Powerful claimed that compromised political elites have ignored a pattern of conquest that has seen villages burned and communities renamed by force across various parts of the country. He insisted that history would ultimately validate Kanu’s preparation over the perceived failures of other leadership structures. By issuing this clarification, IPOB seeks to consolidate its control over the narrative of the ESN at a time when digital misinformation in the region is at an all-time high. The group concluded by assuring its followers that the internal structure remains disciplined and that the mission to protect the region continues unabated.
How do you think this emphasis on a centralized command will impact the influence of self-proclaimed Biafran leaders currently operating from the diaspora?
