ABUJA — In a major political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, and his Kano State counterpart, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, have officially joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). The two influential leaders were received into the party on Sunday, May 3, 2026, by Senator Seriake Dickson, the former Governor of Bayelsa State.
During the reception at his residence, Senator Dickson described the NDC as Nigeria’s most stable and fastest-growing political platform. He emphasized that unlike other major parties currently embroiled in internal strife, the NDC remains entirely free of factions and litigation. Dickson praised the "teeming members" who have invested their trust in the party’s vision over the last five months, declaring that the young party is already prepared to "box above its weight" on the national stage.
Peter Obi, addressing the gathering, called on the Federal Government and the ruling party to allow the democratic space to flourish without interference. He specifically warned against "injecting crisis" into opposition movements, urging for a clean political environment as the nation looks toward the next election cycle. He noted that his decision to join the NDC was driven by a need for a stable platform to address Nigeria’s pressing challenges.
For his part, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso confirmed that his political camp has immediately commenced nationwide registration with the NDC. He urged all Nigerians seeking a credible alternative to join the party as soon as possible. Senator Dickson referred to both Obi and Kwankwaso as "preeminent political brands" and "suitable suitors" for the party’s future, noting that the formal structures and potential joint tickets would be unveiled at the appropriate time.
The move marks a significant consolidation of opposition forces, as both leaders had previously explored alliances through other platforms before settling on the NDC. Political analysts suggest that this merger creates a powerful third force capable of challenging the dominance of the existing major parties in 2027.
How do you think a joint ticket between Peter Obi and Kwankwaso under the NDC would reshape the current political landscape in Nigeria?
