Peoples Democratic Party Formally Structuring Conflict Resolution Organs with Inauguration of Primary Election Appeal Panels

ABUJA, NIGERIA — The National Leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially inaugurated dedicated, high-level appeal panels tasked with systematically entertaining, reviewing, and resolving all formal petitions, grievances, and disputes arising from its recently concluded primary elections. The comprehensive conflict-resolution exercise covers internal electoral processes conducted for presidential, governorship, National Assembly, and state legislative positions across the federation, marking a crucial step in the opposition party's internal stabilization strategy.

According to senior administrative officials at the party's national headquarters, these specialized appellate panels were established as part of a deliberate, institutionalized effort to strengthen transparency, guarantee absolute fairness, and entrench robust internal democratic processes in the selection of its flagbearers. The party expects that providing an independent, structured avenue for conflict resolution will mitigate post-primary friction, prevent costly litigation in external courts of law, and solidify party cohesion ahead of the impending general election cycle.

In an official corporate statement issued from the national secretariat on Thursday, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, explained that the newly constituted committees possess a full mandate to thoroughly consider all complaints officially lodged by aggrieved aspirants and key regional stakeholders who remain genuinely dissatisfied with the conduct or final outcomes of the various primary exercises.

Mohammed emphasized that the leadership expects these judicial-style panels to carefully examine the empirical merits of all submitted appeals, review supporting documentation, and formulate binding recommendations. All final determinations, he noted, will be executed in strict compliance with the foundational tenets of the PDP Constitution, the party's official Electoral Guidelines, and other relevant statutory legal provisions guiding political party administration in Nigeria.

“The newly inaugurated appeal panels will formally hear, evaluate, and review all substantive appeals brought forward by contestants and party stakeholders who are currently dissatisfied with the official outcomes of the primary elections," the national spokesman stated during his address to the press corps. "They are legally empowered to make detailed recommendations in line with the clear provisions of the party’s Constitution, established Electoral Guidelines, and all relevant provisions of the country's electoral laws.”

The image-maker further noted that this organizational development reflects the PDP’s unyielding determination to deliver a highly credible, transparent, and legally defensible candidate-selection process. By addressing internal disputes through structured party organs, the leadership aims to reassure the general electorate and its vast membership base that the party remains firmly committed to the rule of law and the principles of equity.

To underscore the immense political weight and authority backing the reconciliation initiative, Mohammed disclosed that the party’s National Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, will personally lead the high-profile appeal panel handling all disputes originating from the governorship and presidential primary contests. The inclusion of the party's top executive indicates that the leadership views the stability of these executive positions as paramount. Joining the National Chairman on this premium arbitration panel are several veteran political heavyweight figures, including the influential former National Secretary of the party, Samuel Anyanwu, whose extensive administrative experience is expected to assist the panel in navigating complex procedural disputes.

Concurrently, the spokesman revealed that a separate, highly specialized panel has been established to handle the large volume of petitions relating to the legislative branches of government. A prominent party stalwart, Suleiman Afolagbe, has been officially tapped to chair the panel responsible for evaluating appeals stemming from both state assembly and National Assembly primary contests, ensuring that legislative candidates receive focused, expert review of their specific complaints.

According to the official schedules outlined in the secretariat's statement, the legislative primaries appeal panel, which comprises nine carefully selected, neutral members, is scheduled to conduct its formal sittings on June 8 and June 9, 2026. These intensive hearings will take place within the National Working Committee (NWC) Hall, located inside the party’s expansive national secretariat building, Wadata Plaza, in Wuse Zone 5, Abuja.

Following the conclusion of the legislative reviews, the massive 24-member governorship and presidential appeals panel is scheduled to commence its official seating arrangements on June 10, 2026, utilizing the same secure venue. Party leadership has issued a directive to all aggrieved contestants, urging them to ensure their legal teams and necessary witnesses are fully prepared to present their arguments within the specified timelines, as the party remains working against strict statutory deadlines imposed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
