Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has voiced strong opposition to the prospect of another same-faith presidential ticket for the upcoming 2027 general election. Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, the vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress stated that Nigeria’s complex multi-faith population makes a balanced ticket essential for reinforcing national unity, mutual trust, and social inclusion. He noted that maintaining religious balance on presidential ballots provides diverse demographics across the nation with a genuine sense of belonging in the country's governance structure.
The former governor expressed surprise that President Bola Tinubu and the ruling party are reportedly considering retaining a same-faith arrangement for the next election cycle. Kwankwaso observed that while same-faith tickets are not explicitly prohibited by law, political leaders ought to exercise discretion to align with the country's diverse social fabric. He added that the president retains sufficient time before party nomination deadlines to adjust his electoral strategy and present a religiously balanced ticket to the electorate. Recalling his own past political decisions, Kwankwaso pointed out that he deliberately chose an Anglican clergyman as his running mate during the 2023 presidential campaign to ensure fair representation across religious lines.
During the broadcast, Kwankwaso addressed allegations linking his name to a proposed foreign legislative bill regarding communal conflicts and religious rights in northern Nigeria. Dismissing the claims as politically motivated smears orchestrated by domestic rivals, the former governor clarified that he holds no foreign assets that could be subject to international sanctions or financial freezes. He maintained that the allegations were grounded in political hostility rather than fact, expressing confidence that his reputation remains clear as voters look beyond manufactured political controversies.
Reflecting on the shifting priorities of the Nigerian public, Kwankwaso asserted that citizens, particularly younger demographics, are increasingly indifferent to identity politics and religious divisions. He stated that daily economic challenges, high unemployment, and widespread security concerns have shifted voter focus toward practical governance, competence, and leadership capable of improving living standards. According to the former governor, critics who continue to promote identity-driven narratives fail to grasp the real socioeconomic priorities of everyday citizens, especially across northern communities.
Addressing ongoing legal disputes surrounding the opposition coalition, the Nigeria Democratic Congress chieftain expressed full confidence in the judicial system, stating that courts will uphold democratic principles and allow the electorate to choose their leaders freely at the ballot box. Kwankwaso affirmed that the joint ticket led by Peter Obi remains positioned to deliver a strong campaign focused on economic recovery, institutional accountability, and national stability.
