Senate President Godswill Akpabio has returned to Nigeria after a brief vacation in London, promising Nigerians more vibrant legislative engagements as the National Assembly resumes.
Akpabio had earlier led a Nigerian delegation to the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva, Switzerland, held between July 29 and July 31, before proceeding to London for a short break.
He arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja at about 4 a.m. on Monday, where he was received at the Presidential Wing by senators, aides, and supporters from different walks of life.
Speaking to journalists, Akpabio highlighted the importance of Nigeria’s participation in the Inter-Parliamentary Union meetings, stressing that parliamentary diplomacy remains vital to achieving global peace and conflict resolution. He noted that while Nigeria’s legislature had already recorded notable successes in the area, there was still more to be done.
The Senate President emphasised that the 10th National Assembly would continue to pursue policies that promote unity, peace, and effective collaboration among all arms of government. He also pointed out that beyond lawmaking, the parliament has been instrumental in mediating disputes involving labour unions, civil society groups, and government agencies.
Reflecting on the global challenges discussed at the assembly in Geneva, Akpabio said the role of parliamentarians has never been more critical, describing the present moment as a pivotal point in history where collective voices and decisive actions can help shape a better, more stable future.
