Senator Dafinone Condemns Killing of Delta Youth, Demands Immediate Justice for Oghenemine Ogidi

The Senator representing Delta Central Senatorial District, Ede Dafinone, has strongly condemned the reported extrajudicial killing of 28-year-old Oghenemine Million Ogidi, describing the incident as a tragic and unacceptable abuse of power.

In a statement issued on April 28, 2026, Senator Dafinone said he received news of the death with deep shock and sadness, noting that the young man, said to be from Ujevwu in Udu Local Government Area, was reportedly killed on April 26 in Effurun.

The lawmaker condemned the incident in the strongest terms, insisting that the sanctity of human life must never be undermined by those entrusted with the duty of protecting citizens.

According to him, it is unacceptable for security personnel or law enforcement officers to turn their weapons against members of the public in a reckless or unjustified manner.

He described the killing as a heinous act that demands urgent accountability and transparent investigation.

Senator Dafinone also extended condolences to the family of the deceased and the wider Udu community, acknowledging the pain and grief caused by the young man’s sudden death.

He said no parent should be forced to bury a child under circumstances that could have been prevented, particularly where allegations of unlawful use of force are involved.

The senator stated that his thoughts and prayers were with the bereaved family as they mourned what he called a profound and traumatic loss.

He further said he shares in the grief of the family and community while joining calls for justice.

The killing has reportedly generated concern among residents in parts of Delta State, especially in communities within Udu Local Government Area, where the deceased was said to be known.

Although full official details surrounding the circumstances of the incident were still unclear at the time of the statement, allegations that the death involved law enforcement action have heightened public attention.

Responding to the development, Senator Dafinone called on the Nigeria Police Force leadership to take immediate steps.

Specifically, he urged the Inspector General of Police and the Commissioner of Police in Delta State to launch a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the incident.

He said any officer found responsible for the shooting must be identified and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The senator referred to the alleged perpetrator as a “trigger-happy” officer and insisted that such conduct should have no place in a professional security system.

He stressed that justice must not only be done, but must be seen to be done in order to restore public confidence.

According to the lawmaker, his office will actively engage with police authorities and monitor the progress of the investigation.

He said this would help ensure that no stone is left unturned and that the process is not frustrated or abandoned.

The senator added that the family of the deceased deserves closure and confidence that the legal system can respond appropriately.

Beyond the immediate case, Senator Dafinone used the opportunity to speak on broader concerns surrounding policing standards and security conduct in the country.

He urged all armed security personnel operating within Delta Central and surrounding areas to maintain the highest levels of professionalism.

According to him, officers must strictly observe established rules of engagement and respect the rights and dignity of all citizens.

He emphasized that the core duty of every security operative is to protect life, not to take life unlawfully.

The senator also called for a security architecture built on accountability, discipline, and respect for constitutional rights.

At the same time, he appealed to residents of Udu and the general public to remain calm and law-abiding while investigations proceed.

He advised members of the community not to obstruct investigators or take the law into their own hands, saying due process must be allowed to run its course.

Community leaders and civil society observers have increasingly raised concerns in recent years about allegations of excessive force, unlawful detention, and extrajudicial actions by some security operatives in Nigeria.

Incidents involving young victims often generate strong emotional reactions, especially when there are claims that deadly force was avoidable.

Analysts note that swift, credible investigations are often critical in preventing unrest and rebuilding trust between security institutions and the communities they serve.

The death of Oghenemine Ogidi now adds to ongoing conversations about police reform, human rights protections, and mechanisms for civilian oversight.

For many residents in Delta State, the focus is now on whether authorities will move quickly to establish the facts of the case and hold any culpable individuals accountable.

Senator Dafinone’s intervention is expected to increase pressure on relevant agencies to respond decisively.

As calls for justice continue, the Ogidi family and members of the Udu community are left mourning the loss of a young life cut short under troubling circumstances.

The statement was signed by Senator Ede Omueya Dafinone of Delta Central Senatorial District and dated April 28, 2026.
