Donald Trump on Tuesday formally welcomed King Charles III and Queen Camilla to the White House, praising the enduring alliance between the United States and the United Kingdom.
During the greeting ceremony, Trump described Britain as America’s closest friend and highlighted centuries of shared history, language, and values that he said had shaped an extraordinary civilization.
According to the U.S. president, Americans have had no closer allies than the British since the United States gained independence.
Trump said the foundation of the modern partnership rests on common traditions and democratic ideals symbolized by the two nations’ red, white, and blue national colours.
He used the occasion to celebrate what is often referred to as the “special relationship” between Washington and London, a phrase long associated with close diplomatic, military, and intelligence ties between the two countries.
The president also referenced the historic 1941 Atlantic Charter meeting between Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt.
That wartime meeting helped define a shared vision for the post-war world and remains a symbolic milestone in transatlantic cooperation.
Trump said the spirit of that agreement continues to define the bond between the two nations and expressed hope that the relationship would remain strong for generations to come.
Reflecting on the long arc of history, he noted how former adversaries during the American Revolutionary era eventually became close military partners in later conflicts.
He contrasted the era of Redcoats and Yankees with the later alliance of British “Tommies” and American GIs who fought side by side in major twentieth-century wars.
Trump said the transformation from conflict to friendship would have pleased earlier generations, describing the present relationship as one of the most cherished international partnerships in the world.
King Charles and Queen Camilla are in the United States on a state visit running from April 27 to April 30 at Trump’s invitation.
The visit commemorates the 250th anniversary of American independence and is also King Charles’s first official state visit to the United States since ascending the throne.
The trip carries diplomatic significance as both nations seek to reaffirm cooperation on trade, defense, intelligence sharing, climate policy, and wider global security concerns.
For King Charles, the visit also represents an opportunity to strengthen royal diplomacy and continue the long-standing ceremonial relationship between the British monarchy and successive American administrations.
State visits involving British monarchs are relatively rare and often draw global attention because of their symbolic importance.
The last such visit by a British sovereign was by Queen Elizabeth II in 2007.
Political analysts say Trump’s warm rhetoric reflects the strategic value both countries continue to place on the alliance despite occasional policy disagreements.
The schedule for the visit is expected to include formal meetings, ceremonial events, and discussions on bilateral interests.
As the visit continues, attention will focus on whether the symbolism of the occasion translates into renewed cooperation on practical matters affecting both governments.
For now, the White House ceremony underscored a message of continuity: that despite wars, political changes, and shifting global dynamics, the US-UK partnership remains one of the most influential alliances in modern history.
